Wales sends ventilators to India to tackle Covid-19 emergency

10 May 2021 2 minute read

Medical equipment will be sent from Wales to support the international emergency response to the Covid-19 pandemic in India.

The Welsh Government and NHS Wales are providing around 600 oxygen concentrators and more than 300 ventilators which are due to leave for India in the coming days, which has a rolling average of 378,000 new Covid cases a day

According to Johns Hopkins University data India has recorded more than 22.6 million coronavirus cases and 246,116 Covid-related deaths since the start of the pandemic. Experts believe the real death toll could be far higher.

Health Minister Vaughan Gething said: “Covid-19 is a global threat and as such it is right that we are part of the global response, supporting other nations.

“We have worked closely with the UK Government and the Government of India on the logistics in arranging for these supplies to be transported to India and distributed to the hospitals where they are needed most.”

Health Minister Vaughan Gething and Chair of the Wales branch of the British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (BAPIO) Professor Keshav Singhal visited the NHS Wales National Distribution Centre on Monday (10 May) to inspect the supplies.

Flights are being arranged by the Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office.

The PM of Nepal has appealed for Covid help and with our own local community of Nepalese in Wales we ought to try to help.
