Watch: No independence referendum even if Supreme Court judges it legal says Liz Truss

Liz Truss has said that a new independence referendum in Scotland should not go ahead even if the Supreme Court decides that it is legal.

The UK’s highest court will judge whether Scotland can hold an advisory independence referendum of their own without Westminster’s approval.

If the Scottish Government are successful it could pave the way for Wales to do the same further down the line.

The Supreme Court is due to hear the case from October 11-12, just days after the end of the SNP conference in Aberdeen.

But the Prime Minister today said that even if successful, a referendum should not go ahead.

She was asked by ITV’s Tom Sheldrick: “If the Supreme Court rules another referendum is legal, will you be leading the campaign to keep Scotland in the Union?”

Liz Truss replied: “I’m very clear that, in 2014 when there was a referendum, we said it was once in a generation.

“I’m very clear there shouldn’t be another referendum before that generation is up.”

Her comments come after marches for Scottish and Welsh independence over the weekend, as well as an event in Dublin to discuss Irish unity.

10,000 people took part in a march in Cardiff according to one of the organisers, YesCymru. Meanwhile, AUOB Scotland said that a march at the same time in Edinburgh drew the “biggest turnout” for an indy march since before the Covid pandemic.

9,000 people also attended an Ireland’s Future event at Dublin’s 3Arena on Saturday.

Among the speakers were Tánaiste Leo Varadkar, Northern Ireland first minister designate Michelle O’Neill, and Sinn Féin president Mary Lou McDonald. There was also a keynote address by actor Jimmy Nesbitt.

Mr Varadkar, who repeated support for a united Ireland, said that the focus should be more on “how we enhance engagement, build trust and create the conditions for a convincing majority for change”.

The Tories… Bragging about helping defend democracy in Ukraine while trashing it here. Self serving hypocrites. Nothing new there then.

“we said it was once in a generation”
“we” said nothing of the sort.
Alex Salmond described it as a “once in a generation opportunity” ye daft bint. and the mindless, contextless repetition of the phrase “once in a generation” has basically been the closest thing the yoons have had to an argument against a second independence referendum ever since.

This half witted woman really does not understand ‘Democratic Choices’ does she? How on Earth does she think she can over rule the Supreme Court??

It will be ok, if they only overrule the judgement ” a little bit”, just like breaking international laws, regarding the EU deal. Tory’s are allowed to do that.

Just how long is a generation anyway?
It’s like saying ‘how long is a piece of string’.

What Truss wants, Truss gets is not going to work for long. She has “forbidden” the king from travelling, now she intends over-ruling a supreme court should a Scottish independence referendum be approved by them. She hasn’t been voted in by a public vote. She thinks she can walk over anything and everyone as she likes. Power seems to be overwhelming her. She will start a rebellion all by herself if she isn’t careful. Roll on independence in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Soon she will cause regions of England to call for independence too.

Following your logic, Labour were elected to govern in 1997, how have we got a Tory gov today? The people want a Labour gov.

The English government is really pushing it when they say what Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland can or can’t have. Why do we need permission from them? Who the hell do they think they are? We live in the 21st century not in medieval times. They seem to be doing U-turns and breaking agreements when it suits them….. so can we. Their “Britannia rules the wave” time is up.

So not content with ignoring, subjugating, suppressing, oppressing and denying the Scottish people their democratic rights and very human rights, even if the Supreme Court rules that you can’t deny democracy these fascists will break the law to deny the Scottish people what they have DEMOCRATICALLY voted for ? And you wonder why Scotland wants away from these people?

What can she do to stop it if the court says it’s legal?

Interesting conundrum; if Scottish Law says a thing is legal in Scotland does it matter what a court in London says?
SC only has jurisdiction over civil cases in Scotland but not over criminal cases and if Holyrood passes an act in Scotland to hold a referendum they can make it a crime to deny one. That’s the trouble with an unwritten constitution, it can change and be changed.

How so? Many Americans are sympathetic to the cause for Irish reunification and I’m pretty sure Joe Biden would not stand in the way of a NI Border Poll. Some Americans also have Scottish and even Welsh ancestral roots.

The warmongering Americans have had their nuclear weapons in Scottish lochs since the 1950s and made a nuclear target of Scotland. Scotland was NOT asked (again). My own parents demonstrated against it. When independence is achieved, the US can take their weapons of mass destruction to wherever they like. Unlike some races, we refuse to be Washinton’s poodle. Put it in the Thames for a while and see how that goes.

Interesting sentiment from Biden and Obama, given that they incurred a great loss of life in their quest for independence from the same source.

She needs to concentrate on the ‘Get Truss Out’ referendum being organised by her own party. The count of letters going in is heading in the direction of the magic 54.

Very democratic from tinpot Truss. Can you imagine the European Union rejecting the Brexit referendum result stating it was only advisory, which it was, ignoring millions of voters. After all, I can remember Nigel Farage stating at the time if the Leave vote lost would again campaign for a second referendum until we left. So her idle threats are just that, idle. She hasn’t a leg to stand on or the moral high ground to stop a second legal Scottish independence referendum if deemed legal by the highest court in the land. Sorry Liz, I foresee another U-turn on the… Read more »

This incompetent lightweight is no match for Nicola or the mandate given to the SNP by the people of Scotland. Every comment she makes against us is more votes for independence. Every time she insults our First Minister, she insults us all. Take notice Truss: the thistle is not our national emblem for nothing.

Every time some English prime Minister says what another nation can or cannot do it shows very clearly that this is not a union but an English empire.
