A Tory MP has suggested that Doctor Who being played by a woman has pushed young men into crime.

Nick Fletcher, who represents the Don Valley constituency, has been ridiculed on social media for the comments he made in the Westminster parliament.

The Time Lord in the long-running BBC sci-fi series is currently played by Jodie Whittaker.

Fletcher complained that roles such as Doctor Who are being given to women, while men were playing gangsters such as they Kray twins, and Tommy Shelby from Peaky Blinders.

He then asked: “Is there any wonder we are seeing so many young men committing crime?”

“Everywhere, not at least within the cultural sphere there seems to be a call from a tiny yet very vocal minority that every male character or good role model must have a female replacement.

“One only needs to look at the discussions surrounding who will play the next James Bond. And it’s not just James Bond.

“In recent years we have seen Doctor Who, Ghostbusters, Luke Skywalker, The Equalizer, all replaced by women, and men are left with the Krays and Tommy Shelby. Is there any wonder we are seeing so many young men committing crime?”

‘This man makes your laws’

In response to the comments, Labour chair Robert Lloyd said: “This man makes your laws.”

LBC presenter James O’Brien said: “I can’t get over the fact that he’s genuinely & openly threatened by Queen Latifah playing The Equaliser.”

Welsh columnist Cris Dafis said: “In the middle of this nonsense, there’s a point worthy of discussion – the demonisation of all boys and men.”

The comedian Dara Ó Briain said: “Oh Jesus, I just.. How fragile are these people? And I mean Conservative MPs, not young men.”

Former BBC broadcaster Gavin Esler said: “This is certainly an original take on the causes of crime.”

Ian Hughes said: “Utter codswallop. They really are detached from reality. They also crave publicity and need someone else to blame for their total mismanagement of everything.”

Philip Hughes: “I had to give it a laugh. They have completely lost it. This is what happens when you have an incompetent turn a party into a cult of personality and purge the party of everyone who is smarter than you.”

Wow, way to make 2 unbelievably stupid points in one go! The plight of young men is neither due to an increase in leading roles for women nor the sorts of male characters that you don’t like – this is a simultaneously social constructionist and uber-traditionalist point! Quite the feat.

That’s on the assumption that every single male watches Dr Who right?
