A newly elected Plaid Cymru Senedd member has said “we shouldn’t have had an election”.

Mabon ap Gwynfor, who succeeded Dafydd Elis Thomas in Dwyfor Meirionnydd, told the S4C’s election programme Etholiad 2021, that it hasn’t “served democracy”.

The MS suggested it shouldn’t have gone ahead because the country is “in the middle of a public health emergency”.

He argued that it hasn’t been the “best opportunity” to campaign because of that.

Labour is performing strongly so far and Plaid Cymru have failed to make the gains that they’d hoped.

Mabon ap Gwynfor was told that things weren’t looking good for his party in the Rhondda ,where they are defending the seat of former leader Leanne Wood, or in Llanelli, which was a top target.

He said: “If that they case then of course I would be disappointed on a very personal level because I’m personal friends with the party’s candidates.

“The truth is we shouldn’t have had an election in the middle of a public health emergency, and it hasn’t been the best opportunity for people to go out to campaign.

“Therefore, it hasn’t served democracy to be honest, but that where we are, and we have to see what will happen don’t we.”
