A competition has been launched to find new Welsh football chants to support Wales in Euro 2020.

Welsh language organisation Mentrau Iaith and the Football Association of Wales have teamed up and are calling on people of all ages across Wales to get creative and write a new bilingual chant to boost our national team.

Participants in the Gwlad y chants competition are asked to send a recording in to Mentrau Iaith by May 12th, 2021.

A shortlist will be selected by a panel of judges before the public can choose their favourite chant by social media vote.

One judge, musician and producer, Yws Gwynedd, said: “Chants are a big part of a fan’s life, in the crowd, on the bus, in the pub, it makes you feel a part of a family.

“I’m delighted to be a judge for this competition and to choose a shortlist of chants. I urge everyone to get creative and write a chant and hope we hear some of them shouted in the stands soon.”

The main winners will have the opportunity to visit the Wales squad training session with winners of the different categories receiving a signed shirt by the Euro 2020 squad.

Football Association of Wales says it is keen to see more Welsh used and that it recognises the importance of its role in influencing people across Wales to enjoy in Welsh outside school.

‘Red Wall’

Ian Gwyn Hughes, FAW Head of Communications, says: “The Red Wall was an integral part of the team’s success at Euro 2016.

“The power of their support makes the players feel as if they have an extra member on the field with them! Although not as many fans will be able to watch the team in the stadium this year, whether in Baku or Bala, Rome or Rhigos – the winning chants will be a huge boost to the squad.

“We are delighted to be partnering with the Mentrau Iaith on this competition.”

To encourage everyone to take part, however much Welsh they have, the Mentrau Iaith have created a list of Welsh footy terms so anyone can give Cymraeg a go.
