Welsh Gov ‘don’t anticipate significant changes’ to Covid restrictions after news blog says FM pushing for lockdown

The Welsh Government have said that they “do not anticipate making significant changes to the existing regulations” at tomorrow’s Covid review after a news blog claimed that the First Minister had requested that the UK Government announce a lockdown.

Guido Fawkes’ Blog said that Mark Drakeford had “privately demanded a complete lockdown between Christmas and New Year” during a phone call with Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove and the First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon.

However, the Welsh Government responded to the speculation by saying that they didn’t anticipate such a step being taken.

“While there is increasing concern about the Omicron variant, we do not anticipate making significant changes to the existing regulations at the moment,” they said.

A UK Government source had told Guido Fawkes: “On just a limited amount of data, the knee jerk reaction from Welsh Government is to cancel everything and lock everyone away. How long can that approach continue?

“More businesses will go bust and more jobs will be lost, but it’s no surprise that Welsh Labour don’t care about that given their economic track record.”

Another lockdown by the Welsh Government would likely require the cooperation of the UK Treasury as they would be able to provide furlough money to businesses. Yesterday the Chancellor Rishi Sunak signalled that no such financial assistance would be forthcoming.

Er would that be the same ‘uk government source’ that spent the last week denying covid rule breaking parties had taken place at 10 downing street? 🤔😉

Strange how a “UK Gov source” is worried about business when the attitude of Boris was ” f##k business ” when talking about covid measures.

Sounds like just another attempt to discredit Mark Drakeford and undermine devolution. These sinister ploys need to be constantly exposed and highlighted.

There’s a lot about Drakeford’s policies and stances that I may disagree with. However his measured steady stance earns him a measure of trust which other politicians who step too easily into higher gears of hysteria and rhetoric do not earn. For any Anglo Brit centred blogger to take that sort of swipe is just another empty gesture from a clown who loves his own freak show – a gutter in which blinkered xenophobes rant away their day.
