Welsh Government not considering ‘confusing’ local lockdowns as in England
The Welsh Government are not considering local lockdowns as in England as this would “create confusion”, according to Minister for Finance Rebecca Evans.
She said that rather than look at local lockdowns the emphasis would be on the contact tracing system due to start next month.
Yesterday England’s Health Secretary Matt Hancock said that the UK Government would be implementing local lockdowns there.
“We will be implementing local lockdowns in future where there are flare-ups,” he said. “And we have a system we are putting in place with a combination of Public Health England and the new Biosecurity Centre.
“Along with the local directors of public health who have an absolutely crucial role in decision making in this system.”
‘Small areas’
But Rebecca Evans said that the advantage of the Welsh Governments test and trace strategy would be that locking down individual areas would not be needed.
“At the moment we’re not considering differential lockdowns in different parts of Wales, and part of that is that I think the strength of the message is that it is a very clear message that applies to everybody across Wales,” she said.
“And I think that if you do look for differential lockdowns or lockdowns in particular small areas then there is a potential for a great deal of confusion.”
There has been some variation in the spread of coronavirus in Wales, with nearly half of all new daily Welsh coronavirus cases announced yesterday in the north of the country.
Other parts of Wales, such as Ceredigion, have seen almost no new recorded cases in weeks.

I disagree on one point. I think it is incumbent of nationalist like myself to hold both the Welsh and UK unionist governments to account especially so now when the health and safety of Cymru is at stake

We’re in a global emergency of shifting hotspots and flare-ups and lives are being lost. It’s too early for any government to take any response off the table. Whoever you are, you have a duty to your fellow human beings to stay alert to changes in advice and regulations that apply to wherever you are -and comply. The police and the courts should be empowered to deal with “the confused” whoever they may be.

It was a success ultimately, but nevertheless a disaster initially – the reason being that there could of course be no epidemic unless Party and Government said there was an epidemic.
So until Party and Government said there was an epidemic there absolutely was no epidemic, so those who asserted that there was had to recant. And by the time Party and Government finally announced that, after all, there was an epidemic, it was rather late in the day.
But after that, indeed, the Chinese master-plan was ultimately remarkably successful.

Although I can see the point of simplicity the situation on the ground in Wales currently is that the South Eastern counties and the major conurbations of Newport and Cardiff were the first areas to suffer with the most cases and deaths. This being due to the larger movement of people into those areas from other areas in the UK where the virus had established itself.
