Wrexham ‘Hollywood sign’ revealed to be marketing stunt by vehicle renting service
Wrexham’s new ‘Hollywood sign’ has been revealed to be a marketing stunt by a vehicle renting service.
It was revealed this morning by the Wrexham Leader that Vanarama, the sponsors of the National League in which Wrexham play, were behind the giant sign which had appeared on Bersham Bank near Rhostyllen.
The sign can be seen from the A483.

Some had speculated that the sign was the work of Hollywood duo Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, a suggestion that they denied.
The sign attracted mostly positive comments, but some expressed disappointment that the Welsh language original name ‘Wrecsam’ wasn’t also included.
“Would of loved ‘Wrecsam’ added too,” Geraint Rogers said.
“Hopefully still time, there’s defo the room!” Wrexham councillor Carrie Harper replied.

I’m pretty sure Wrecsam came after Wrexham in this instance.
1547 Wreckesham buckelers mentioned. C13 Gwrexham Gregsam. The area was Welsh speaking. A nephew of Owain Glyndwr, Sion ap Madog, was called Alecsander i Wrecsam by C15 poet Guto’r Glyn. Sion’s heir was described, in cynghanedd, as ‘Gwregys am ais Gwregsam wyt’ ‘You’ve got Wrexham’s back’.
I’d say Wrecsam/Wrexham are probably as old as each other.
Could be worse.
