Wrexham Maelor Hospital ask patients not to attend after evacuation due to ‘ongoing incident’

Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board has asked patients not to attend Wrexham Maelor Hospital today due to an “ongoing incident” there.

It has not yet been confirmed what is the nature of the incident. Staff and patients were evacuated shortly after 1pm, and the road to the hospital has been blocked off by police cars. Busses that pass the hospital are being rerouted.

North Wales Police meanwhile have asked people to “avoid the area until further notice”.

“We are currently dealing with an incident at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital.,” they said.

“Due to an ongoing incident at Wrexham Maelor Hospital that is being managed by North Wales Police, we are asking people not to attend their planned appointments (22 April 2021) and to avoid the site,” the Health Board said.

“We would like to apologise for any inconvenience and will provide another update soon.”

Wrexham MP Sarah Atherton has also tweeted to ask people to avoid the area while emergency services deal with the incident.

First Minister Mark Drakeford and UK Labour leader Keir Starmer had visited Wrexham earlier in the day but have now left the town.

Wrexham Town Inspector, Luke Hughes told Wrexham.com that officers are in attendance at an “ongoing incident” and that “at this time there is no immediate risk to the public”.

Insp Hughes added: “Officers will support the hospital staff and provide reassurance until the incident is concluded.

“I would urge all members of the public to avoid the area to prevent congestion and allow officers to resolve the incident as promptly as possible.”
