The Met Office have announced a yellow weather warning for all of Wales as Storm Barra is set to batter the country on Tuesday.

Barra is the second major storm of the winter and comes just over a week since Storm Arwen left 20,000 in Wales without power.

A weather warning for snow has also been announced for Scotland where hundreds of properties remain without power.

For Wales, the Met Office said that strong winds are expected from 9am Tuesday until midnight, with potential travel disruption in places.

They said that people should expect:

  • Some short term loss of power and other services is possible
  • Likely delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport
  • Some bus and train services to probably affected, with some journeys taking longer
  • Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely
  • It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves

“A deep area of low pressure moving in across the UK from the Atlantic is likely to bring high winds to many parts of the UK,” a spokesperson said.

“Strong winds arriving into the west through the morning, spreading inland and reaching eastern areas through the afternoon and early evening. Gusts of 45-50 mph are expected widely, with 60-70 mph in exposed coastal locations. Strongest winds will ease across inland areas into the overnight period.”

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said that he is “concerned” at the number of homes still without power after Storm Arwen and has held calls with local leaders and Lt Col Mark Steed, who is coordinating the military involvement in the response.

The prime minister tweeted: “I am grateful for the tireless efforts of the emergency teams and volunteers on the ground but remain concerned that… households are still without power.

“I reiterated to those I spoke to that the government is ready to further support their work in any way we can.”
