YesCymru have reached 10,000 members, only a day after they hit the 9,000 mark.

The Welsh independence movement had previously set a target of 10,000 members before the end of the year. They hit the target at 5.27pm today, they said, “a little earlier” than they had expected.

The cross-party movement said that they had seen their membership increase from 2,300 members at the beginning of the year.

The latest poll on Welsh independence conducted in September showed that with ‘don’t knows’ removed, 32% were in favour of Welsh independence and 68% against.

‘Mass movement’

“Something big and beautiful and powerful is happening in Wales,” YesCymru Chairman Sion Jobbins said.

“Westminster’s handling of COVID-19 has shown to people in Wales that the Senedd and Wales can do a better job than Westminter. Westminster isn’t the ‘Mother of Parliaments’ – it’s just the world’s best gentleman’s club.

“In the Internal Market Bill – under the guise of a boring document which we need not worry our little heads about – Westminster took away powers from Wales, powers we have won in not one but two referendums in 1997 and 2011.

“We’ve seen the Tory Government in London give contracts worth millions to their friends. Some £12bn – more than the entire health budget in Wales – was wasted on a track and trace system that doesn’t even work!

“When the Senedd has ignored Westminster – we have done things better. The two-week lockdown in Wales, which is difficult and stressful for us all, is something the Westminster Tories their fans in Wales mocked. It didn’t take a genius to see that England would have to lockdown soon otherwise the NHS would be overwhelmed over the winter.

“When Johnson announced the English Lockdown, suddenly the ‘magic Money Tree’ began blooming! Two weeks ago when Mark Drakeford and the Senedd asked for money – which they even promised to payback – Westminster said no.

“We’re now building a mass movement for independence. We need all hands on deck. Together we are strong. Wales isn’t asking permission any longer. With your support, we’re standing up for our country, communities and decency.”
