YesCymru Chair re-elected unopposed

The Chair of YesCymru has been re-elected unopposed.

Siôn Jobbins, will continue to head the grassroots pro-independence group, which has seen its membership surge to over 18,000 in the past year.

The news was revealed ahead of the elections to the organisation’s Central Committee.

Sarah Rees will also become Vice-Chair and Gwyn Llewelyn will remain as Treasurer after they both stood unopposed.

Committee member Shane Brennan looks set to become Secretary after YesCymru co-founder and former Chair Iestyn ap Rhobert withdrew from the race.

Mark Hooper, founder of Banc Cambria is also stepping down from the committee to “focus” on getting the Welsh community bank off the ground.

The AGM is due be held online at 10am on Saturday 22 May. During the meeting YesCymru’s Central Committee will be elected by an online vote.

There are also candidates running for the eight non-portfolio positions on the Central Committee, and people will be able to vote for a maximum of eight candidates on the day of the meeting. Jen Llywelyn recently withdrew from the race.

Why on earth is YesCymru not allowing its whole membership to vote on the central committee? A movement that wants to empower Wales to choose its own destiny doesn’t trust its own members to elect the committee? I will try to be there for the AGM but may well have to look after my kids at that time – so my voice doesn’t count. If YesCymru is going to succeed, it needs to be inclusive, to empower and encourage its membership to get involved.
