YesCymru have appointed their first ever full-time Chief Executive Officer.

Gwern Gwynfil will be responsible for the day-to-day running of YesCymru and for the implementation of its strategy for achieving independence for Wales.

The 48-year-old has a business background, having been Managing Director of Tregaron-based family business, Rhiannon Cyf for 18 years. The family business was established by his mother, the gold and silversmith, Rhiannon Ifans, over 50 years ago.

Gwern Gwynfil graduated in history from Oxford and has a postgraduate diploma from Aberystwyth, and has worked across several organisations before returning to the family business in 2004.

He said: “I’m looking forward to playing such a key role in the next chapter of YesCymru’s development. Contributing my energy towards the campaign for independence for Wales in a full-time role is an exciting prospect, it will allow me to make a real difference to a campaign that’s so close to my heart.”

‘Growing stronger’

YesCymru’s Board of Directors, to whom Gwern Gwynfil will report, said that his appointment as a CEO marks an important step in YesCymru’s growth and will significantly advance the cause of Welsh independence.

YesCymru’s Chair, Elfed Williams said: “We very much welcome Gwern to this exciting new role. Appointing a CEO is such a pivotal decision in developing YesCymru and the campaign for independence further.

“As we see from what’s happening in Westminster, the case for independence is growing stronger by the day, and building a professional team to spearhead our organisation is key. Appointing Gwern is a great step forward.”

Gwern starts working with YesCymru today (5 September 2022), as the organisation plans for the next Welsh independence march organised alongside AUOBCymru in Cardiff on 1 October.

YesCymru is a non-party-political movement dedicated to the goal of an independent Wales. Previously an unincorporated association, YesCymru became a private company limited by guarantee in January 2022.

Top of to-do list: clarify please:
1) is YesCymru open to all shades of Indy? Or only the woke kind, like Plaid/Labour?
2) what exactly is AUOB? Is this a one-man band? Does YesCymru own it? If so, how?
A genuinely “all shades” ie including non-woke will succeed and will deserve to.
For example, noone I know wants to trash the environment. But I don’t want to face a climate-dogma test. Just Indy, please

Those questions are quite legitimate but likely to bring a segment of “supporters” out in a nasty allergic rash. I suspect it’s still very much an “our way or no way” mindset.

It is unfortunate. “Woke” began as word for the (assumed) post-neolib/neoconservative progressivism in the Obama era (a word that many black Conservatives on the other side of the pond found instantly racist, given it was far more popular with mainly white, gentrifying laptop classes). Thereafter it morphed into an indicator of those who backed a sort of quasi-communist corporatism and a reification of the weird rule utilitarianism of the late 80s and 90s cultural fringe (hey, there’s the white laptop class guys and gals again – the veneer of “equality” soon rubbed off when the word of the movement became… Read more »

Good answer. Short, mean-spirited and obfuscatory.

Well that long piece could have graced pseuds corner way back in its pomp. This last response is bang on the button although I doubt whether there are many in the leadership bubbles in our country who will heed this last bit of advice and even fewer of them could understand the summary of distorted meanings you provided in the longer piece. I may not agree with you on lots of things but you are a lot more entertaining than many on here.

Good to hear. Gwern Gwynfil is a good appointment. The far-right extremist wing of the Conservative party with puppet PM Liz Truss are as I write ramping up their anti-Wales & Scotland rhetoric with their soon-to-be appointee like Lord Frost who not only shows utter contempt towards Welsh & Scottish devolution but the very idea that we are nations in our own right not be demoted to the subordinate regions tied to the coattails of England he wishes we were.
