Plaid Cymru leader Adam Price is now the highest rated politician in Wales, overtaking the previous First Minister Carwyn Jones, according to a poll by YouGov for ITV/Cardiff University.

His average 4.6/10 rating put him above the new Labour First Minister Mark Drakeford, who scored an average of 3.9/10.

However, 72% answered ‘Don’t know’ when asked for their assessment of Adam Price, compared with 56% for Mark Drakeford.

Both were far less known that their predecessors as Plaid Cymru and Labour leaders, Leanne Wood and Carwyn Jones. Only 32% didn’t know enough about Leanne Wood to offer an assessment, and 27% Carwyn Jones.

The full ratings out of 10 in descending order were:

Position Name Rating /10 Change Don’t know
Plaid Cymru leader Adam Price 4.6 +0.3 72%
Previous Welsh Labour leader Carwyn Jones 4.5 0.0 27%
Previous Plaid Cymru leader Leanne Wood 4.5 +0.1 32%
Welsh Liberal Democrats leader Jane Dodds 4.0 +0.2 76%
Welsh Labour leader Mark Drakeford 3.9 -0.1 56%
Lib Dems leader Vince Cable 3.8 -0.1 30%
Conservative leader Theresa May 3.5 -0.4 9%
Welsh Conservative leader Paul Davies 3.5 -0.2 74%
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn 3.2 -0.7 10%
UKIP Wales leader Gareth Bennett 3.1 +0.1 76%
UKIP leader Gerard Batten 2.8 -0.3 73%

Professor Roger Awan-Scully said that it was notable that Mark Drakeford continued to poll “quite poorly”.

“Although the new First Minister was clearly rated highly by many of his colleagues, he has not yet been able to make the same impression on the Welsh public,” he said.

“There is some encouraging new for Plaid Cymru. Although most of the Welsh public do net yet appear to know who Adam Price is, among those who are aware of him his ratings have risen – indeed, he is (very marginally) the most highly-rated of all the politicians questioned about in the latest poll.

“The clear challenge for Mr Price, and his party, will be for him to cut through to a much larger proportion of the Welsh electorate.”

A Plaid Cymru Spokesperson said:

“People are fed up with Labour’s tired, old politics and the Conservative Party is serving up a policy that it knows will actively damage the Welsh economy.

“Adam Price is offering a fresh, new, different approach that is engaging people across our country. Under his leadership, Plaid Cymru is putting forward an alternative to the broken Westminster-focused politics of the past and putting the building blocks in place for a New Wales.”
