The Remain Alliance can stop Brexit and send a record number of Plaid MPs to Westminster

We live in tumultuous and extraordinary times that require us all to be prepared to step beyond the bounds of the comfortable, and do what’s needed in the national interest.

Brexit represents the single greatest threat to the Welsh nation in an entire generation.

There is no such thing as a ‘good Brexit’ for Wales – not Boris Johnson’s botched deal, not Theresa May’s deal, and certainly not No Deal.

Any version of Brexit would risk thousands of jobs across Wales, and plunge our agriculture and manufacturing industries into peril.

That is not a threat Plaid Cymru can stomach.

With more MPs, more AMs, and more councillors, and having beaten all other pro-Remain parties in May’s European election, Plaid Cymru is the lead party of Remain in this election.

As such, it falls to us to demonstrate the serious, grown-up, nation-before-party politics that people expect from us.

National interest

That’s why Plaid Cymru has today announced that it has reached an arrangement with two other pro-Remain parties.

In constituencies across Wales, the Liberal Democrats and the Greens will not be contesting the general election to give voters a single candidate – a Plaid Cymru candidate – who supports remaining in the EU.

By uniting behind the Plaid Cymru candidate, we have the opportunity to send a clear message to Westminster that Wales wants an end to the Brexit chaos.

And while Plaid Cymru too will stand aside in a smaller number of seats to allow the pro-Remain vote to coalesce around the Liberal Democrats or the Greens, the arrangement between the three parties – and this election – offers up and historic opportunity to send a record number of Plaid Cymru MPs to Westminster.

Our three parties have put aside our own interests to put the national interest of Wales first. We can take back control from the Westminster establishment, which knows little and cares less for Wales.

As Plaid Cymru’s leader Adam Price has said today, now is the time for us to put country before party, to put people before politics, and to embrace the common good.

I must assume there are some who will not vote Lib Dem for the benefit of their country due to their Methodistic-like prejudice against all that is not Leftist.

Methodists were/are hard core Protestants likely to have an aversion to any of the modern pseudo-socialist “Leftist” ideology. The modern Cof E seems the institution most well disposed toward nouveau stuff.

“As Plaid Cymru’s leader Adam Price has said today, now is the time for us to put country before party, to put people before politics, and to embrace the common good.” Sounds like a “One Nation Tory” to me. Apart from that, if putting “country before party” means doing backroom deals to suppress the democratic voice of the Welsh nation and fix an anti-Brexit result based on a minority of votes, then these parties have a dearth of democratic principles and a very low opinion of the people they claim to represent. Plaid Cymru will not recover from this betrayal,… Read more »

Boring again Pete. Are you worried Indy certain and Indy curious are now regularly polling 50% plus in Wales

Welsh Independence is as certain as the fact that Johnson and Cairns are liars, Labour are in competent and clueless and Westminster doesn’t give a dam about people who live in Wales

Informed consent is very important. Now people have been told what they voted for and the effects it will have on Wales, we should have a chance to confirm that decision before the damage happens. Protecting Wales is at the heart of Plaid, this is protecting Wales and it may cost the support of people who don’t support Plaid but that’s a price worth paying.

Brexit was based on lies and false promises. As a Plaid supporter and committed Welsh Nationalist the best thing that could happen to quicken the arrival of independence would be a hard Brexit because the realities of the Tory and Labour snake oil salesmen will soon come to roost But as some one who cares about people who live in Wales I welcome APs decision Country before Party People before Politics Well done Adam well done Plaid as much as I wish in my constituency we had a Plaid candidate to vote for I applaud the stance and recognises the… Read more »

the points below strike me as below the standard of the responses to the previous nation cymru articles about this alliance which were all intelligent relevant points. Either Brexit is or is not a grave risk to Wales. If it is the alliance is justified to avert it. If it is not and therefore the alliance is not justified, the commentators need to say this, and why they think it would be a lessor risk to Wales than the alliance. I see this as Adam showing bold courageous (in view of the back biting below) leadership which is desperately needed… Read more »
