‘England should have three teams good enough to beat Wales’
If Michael Sheen’s stirring war cry to the Wales squad wasn’t enough to motivate them at the World Cup, then former England international Danny Murphy may have provided the best motivation yet.
Speaking on last night’s Kick Off programme on Talk Sport alongside presenter Danny Kelly and football journalist Shaun Custis, the trio were debating the respective merits of the possible England squad to be named for the World Cup in Qatar.
As you would imagine when it comes to such matters there was much hand-wringing – and the usual arrogant nonsense we’ve come to expect from pundits and the England football team.

Unfortunately, former Liverpool and Tottenham man Murphy evidently hasn’t learned any lessons from past tournaments, when he uttered some pretty disrespectful words about England’s World Cup Group B opponents Wales, the US and Iran – while being particularly dismissive of Rob Page’s side.
“The teams we are playing in the group, we should roll over nine out of 10, well 10 out of 10 times,” he uttered in a manner we have come to expect from pundits whose superiority complex never quite matches the continued underachievement of the England football team.
“Even the Welsh we should beat 10 out of 10 times,” Murphy added. “You know, from our pool of players, we should have three teams that can beat Wales.”
Presenter Danny Kelly quickly butted in with: “Yes, those are those are the kinds of words that get stuck on dressing room walls aren’t they?”
Well, you know Danny boy, we think these are EXACTLY the kind of words that will add fuel to the Welsh fire.
And yes, we do think Rob Page should pin these words on the wall before the game against England on November 29.
When will you lot ever learn we ask ourselves. Never, probably.
And remember Danny, we’ve got Michael Sheen – and you haven’t.

That’s what makes every single loss they suffer all the more delicious – the rational reasoning (bigger player pool, more investment, higher quality league system etc) always seems to be overlaying a “divine right” sort of attitude. When you consider that the English outnumber the Welsh by about seventeen to one and he thinks that they could make only three teams too take on Wales don’t sound very good to me . and what about Rugby we more than compete with them and they have got more rugby clubs than we have players HAS a sporting Nation on population we in Wales have got too be one of the best in the world and the English down at the bottom

And what does the UK government do but call an emergency meeting to see if Welsh, and other, taxpayers can bail them out.
The actual interview is meant as a criticism of England. That their players should add up to be one of the best teams in the world but somehow they always fall short.
Which is actually kinda true. England spectacularly underachieve. But this article seems to interpret it the other way around.
Edit: Just realised this was written by the same Cardiff City ‘journalist’ who reported Gareth Bale would sign for them, so it’s a bit rich of them to talk about ‘pundits whose superiority complex never quite matches the continued underachievement’
I must say I’m glad the article describes Danny Murphy as an ex-England player.
Because I have honestly never heard of him. How many times was he capped? I’m guessing just a handful against opposition like San Marino
When you look at england the size of the country they have won a world cup once which they still bloody harp on about other countries of the same size have won world cups and European cups Italy Germany France and others the london media in whatever sport boasting that they will win this and that and they fall flat on their face I visited family on my wife side who is Irish in London they consider themselves English being born there we where in the Pub and one of the Daughters asked my wife would i be Supporting England… Read more »
Keep saying that Danny Murphy. It will come back to haunt you big time. We in Wales never say we are the favourites to win or the best side in the tournament before a ball is kicked only to be humbled by a far superior team as deluded England have been on numerous occasions.
