Support for ‘circuit break’ lockdown highest in Wales, poll suggests

Support for a two-week ‘circuit break’ lockdown is highest in Wales, a poll has suggested.

A Deltapoll survey showed that with ‘don’t knows’ removed 69% in Wales, England and Scotland supported a lockdown, with even a majority of Conservatives – 62% – backing the move.

In Wales, support for a circuit break lockdown was even higher, at 79%, the poll suggested. Support was lowest in London and the North of England.

Wales began a 17-day lockdown on Friday lasting until 9 November.

Deltapoll surveyed 1,589 adults in Great Britain online between the 22nd and 24th October 2020. Data are weighted to be representative of the population.

 

‘Not easy’

In a press conference today, Health Minister Vaughan Gething called the circuit break lockdown “the shortest possible intervention to make the maximum difference”.

“This is not an easy time for any of us in Wales,” he said. “For the next two weeks, we must all live with a new and very tough set of regulations.”

Six more people have died and 1,158 have tested positive for Covid-19 in Wales, according to Public Health Wales.

It brings the number of deaths since the pandemic started to 1,783.

There has been a total of 43,839 confirmed cases in Wales.

There are also 616 confirmed cases of patients with coronavirus in Welsh hospitals, the highest figure since May 24 and up 26% on last Sunday.

Fifty-six people are in critical care in Wales with Covid-19, an increase of 14%.
