Plans submitted for new town centre cocktail bar

Proposals have been submitted to the local planning authority to create a new cocktail bar in a town centre.

The plans, which would see the development of a “loft cocktail bar and ground floor bar”, were handed in to Bridgend Council in May, with the aim of creating a new “public entertainment facility” in the town.

The town centre site at 14-18 Nolton Street would operate across three floors in buildings that are currently described as being dilapidated, if given the go-ahead.

The first floor of the building was previously used as Uwe Jantzen’s Hair Salon while the second floor was part of R L Edwards Solicitors Offices. Reports add that the ground floor, formerly Izzit Accessories at 14 Nolton Street could also become a traditional-style pub.

The idea comes just months after a number of other proposals which have been submitted for the area, such as the relocation of the Hobos music venue to the former fire station on Derwen Road, as well as plans to redevelop two well-known Bridgend eyesores on Nolton Street, in the former Ranch chip shop and Welcome to Town pub.

A report submitted for the new cocktail bar read: “The proposed Loft cocktail bar and function rooms are to occupy on the first and second floors respectively. Formerly the first floor was Uwe Jantzen’s Hair Salon and the second floor was part of R L Edwards Solicitors Offices.

“The upper floors would be accessed via the existing entrance between No.18 and No.22. This is presently boarded up. The ground floor vacant premises of No.14, formerly Izzit Accessories, will become a traditional-style pub, with the small basement used as a cellar.

“The section of the covered but external arcade walkway, formerly known as Nolton Arcade or Lee’s Arcade, that runs between No.14 and No.12 (Optic Shop) will become an internal space incorporated into the floor area of the proposed ‘traditional pub’ at No.14.”

The plans will now go before Bridgend Council’s planning department for a decision to be made in the coming months.
