A group of Welsh football fans became trapped in a lift in Moldova for two hours yesterday.

The Welsh fans were staying at the Cosmos Hotel in Chișinău, the capital and largest city of the Republic of Moldova, on Monday night.

Nine Welsh fans became stuck, including Bedwyr Jones, Ieuan Savage, Garmon Ceiro and Aled Elwyn.

One of those who were stuck, Garmon Ceiro, said that the “worst thing” about the experience was that two of his fellow passengers “came from Gwynedd”.

Another, Aled Elwyn, tweeted: “Please grandfather, tell us about the time you were stuck in the lift in Moldova? No child, we never talk about the lift – it’s too soon.”

Wales play Moldova in the World Cup Qualifiers First round at 7.45pm on Tuesday at Zimbru Stadium, Chișinău.

    Nice bit of Welsh humour

The F&CO currently offers the following advice to travellers from the UK “Most visits to Moldova are trouble-free.”

    – Hope all the Welsh fans got to the game on time. Moldova 0 -Wales 2!

It was interesting to read media accounts of the Welsh team’s impressions of the country in 1994 (Moldova- 3 Wales-2) and again in 2017. Indeed much has changed in that country in the intervening years. Moldova had to struggle with the parlous state of its economy after the disintegration of the USSR. While there are criticisms about weakness in areas such as governance most commentators are generally complementary about Moldova’s progress.
