Breakup of the UK happening on ‘rocket boosters’, says Labour MP
The breakup of the UK is happening on “rocket boosters” according to a Labour MP.
Clive Lewis, who represents Norwich South, pointed to Brexit as being the main reason for this.
He also described the UK leaving the European Union as “a kind of post-imperial tantrum”, and said the breakup of the union is happening “whether we like it or not.”
He made the comments following Labour’s Brighton conference on the Oh God, What Now? podcast, which was formerly known as the anti-Brexit Remainiacs podcast.
He said: “When you think about the uphill struggle we’re facing now with the breakup of Britain, the breakup of Britain is happening, whether we like it or not.
“The raison d’etre for the United Kingdom was an imperial project, you know, you needed to have that critical mass, in landmass, resources, people power, to run the empire, to win the empire.
‘Tantrum’
He added: “The empire physically now has gone, and Brexit – if you want, I’m sure it’s been described in your show before as a kind of post-imperial tantrum of this country – and that has, not by design, but the outcome of that, with Scotland voting to stay inside the European Union, has seen the breakup of Britain, I think, been put on rocket boosters.
“The SNP are not going anywhere. What they’re offering the people of Scotland is something that Labour will never be able to replicate whilst it has this kind of Unionist, first-past-the-post mindset.”

No doubt Labour will be defending its and the Tories right wing nationalism while they criticise Wales and Scotlands left wing nationalism.

That’s an unfair generalisation, I think. Valleys people were misled, that’s all, plus they were spooked by the thought of a Welsh border that began on the Greek-Turkish border. It wasn’t by and large out of any masochistic loyalty to the union.

Regarding Brexit, if not just Wales but the whole of the UK voted by a big margin (that would be the legally required in most sane countries) to leave I’d believe in the sayings ‘Wales voted to leave’ or the ‘UK wants out’. But the result was virtually a 50/50 split, a meager 3.8% in favour of leaving. I don’t think Brexit is the main reason that the union is doomed, that would be the English.
And not so even so much Brexit – but the Conservative & Unionist decision to leave the single market
