Council’s controversial flagship building leaking

An investigation is being carried out at a council’s controversial flagship £58 million office complex after a leak was found.

The leak at Coed Pella in Colwyn Bay caused damage to several workstations on the third floor of the property.

The complex has been the subject of controversy since it opened in 2018, with council staff relocating there from other parts of the council’s office estate.

The council pays around £1.5m a year to rent the property on a 40-year lease.

Last year a Freedom of information request revealed that the cash-strapped authority had spent £10.6 million in running costs over a five-year period.

Leak

The costs included £638,869 spent on cleaning the building alone between 2018 and 2023.

Now it has emerged that six desks have been damaged by a leak.

A spokeswoman for Conwy County Council said: “The building’s original contractors are investigating the cause of the leak.

“There was a minor leak on floor three at Coed Pella recently. This affected six workstations (six desks) but caused no other disruption for staff. The area is now dry.”

The council would not confirm the cost of the repair.
