First Minister announces £4m of financial and humanitarian aid for Ukraine

The First Minister has announced £4m of financial and humanitarian aid for Ukraine.

Mark Drakeford said the cash is to support the “Ukrainian people who are bravely resisting this unprovoked and brutal act of war”, after it was attacked by Russia.

He also said that Wales, as a Nation of Sanctuary, “stands ready to welcome people fleeing Ukraine”.

He revealed that he has written to Prime Minister Boris Johnson urging the UK Government to make it easier for “Ukrainian citizens to come to the UK quickly and safely”, and to make sure that “bureaucracy” does not delay the process.

Mark Drakeford said: “We stand in support of the Ukrainian people who are bravely resisting this unprovoked and brutal act of war.

“The Welsh Government will provide £4m in financial and humanitarian aid to Ukraine, which will help to provide crucial support to many who are in desperate need. We are also assessing what surplus medical equipment could usefully be sent to the country.

“Wales, as a Nation of Sanctuary, stands ready to welcome people fleeing Ukraine. Tomorrow we will be holding urgent discussions with local authority leaders to ensure preparations are in place to accept refugees.

“I have also written to the Prime Minister urging the UK Government to strengthen current arrangements to enable Ukrainian citizens to come to the UK quickly and safely. It is vital people can seek safe sanctuary here without bureaucracy delaying that process.

“The UK Government must honour its duty to allow people to seek safety in situations such as those we are all witnessing today with great sadness and repulsion.”

‘Displacement’

The Russian attack on Ukraine has caused the displacement of many tens of thousands of Ukrainian people from their homes and marked the onset of what could be the largest humanitarian crisis in Europe for decades.

The Welsh Government is urging anyone who is able to help to consider making a financial donation to the British Red Cross, UNICEF UK or to the UNHCR UK.

Our links with Ukraine actually go back to the 1800s. Here’s a very interesting link.

So much of our charity donations end up in addresses. In England.
We need to separate the for Wales read England attitude of the Charity Commissioners and so called National charities
I want the people of Wales to put their money into Welsh institutions for use in Wales and globally

No sign of the Tory party donating some of the millions that they have been given by Russian donors, and friends of Putin, to help ease the suffering in Ukraine.

Somewhat related, does anyone know why the options for sharing article comments are limited to Twitter or two Russian social media platforms……?

Both of which are banned in Ukraine by the way. Just seemed fishy to me.

Regardless, an excellent humanitarian approach to the crisis which would be equally as welcome as waiving visas of refugees from Ukraine.

Is there any way that we can make sure to keep grubby, grabby English hands out of the pot? Bozo no doubt has some Eaton chums he’d like to divert it to

Grow up and stop making other people’s suffering about your own petty xenophobia.

Disgraceful website for keeping this cess pit drivel on its comment pages

Ifan! Try getting some volunteers to write these comments who even look like they have some perspective.
