Guardian refers to Team GB as England in Tokyo 2020 football coverage

The Guardian has referred to Team GB as England in the coverage of a football match at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The London-based liberal newspaper made the error as the women’s team played Chile in its victorious opening match of the tournament.

They comfortably beat the Chileans 2-0, with Manchester City striker Ellen White scoring either side of the break to put her team in the driving seat in Group E.

The Team GB squad is made up of 19 England players, as well as Kim Little and Caroline Weir from Scotland and Sophie Ingle from Wales.

At 8:47am on the live blog the Guardian posted: “England win a corner. The referee seems very keen on stamping out set-piece-based penalty-area shenanigans, and has a chat with Francisca Lara before she lets the corner be taken, which the Chile defender seems to think is quite funny. The corner is cleared when it eventually comes in.”

The post was updated at 9:03am to say: “Team GB win a corner”.

Dan Roberts said: “I see the Guardian’s coverage of Team GB is going as expected #NoTeamGB #CymruAmByth

I remember being in the Millenium Stadium in 2012 and someone behind me shouting “Come on England.” It’s very easy to support a GB football team if you’re an English football fan because you can pretend there is no difference without any effort at all.

It’s inbred in the so called ‘UK’ media. British is really English. They’ve done it so often in cricket the England and Wales team is now – just England. It has always been one of the primary reasons independence is so important – identity.

I’d prefer them to be called England.
Let’s not pretend a GB team is seen by the rest of the world as anything else.

Is anyone surprised really? After 500 years they aren’t suddenly going to start showing common respect to the elder nations now.

Team GB? You must be joking! I recall a Welsh runner winning a high profile race and reaching for a Dragon flag from a fan….. The TV immediately pulled away to shots of the advertising blimp and race replays until the runner had left the stadium. No close ups or joyous family hugs and kisses, certainly no flag draped shots. What is so sinister about this is that someone decreed this as policy.

If this isn’t a warning I don’t know what is. A good example is Cricket. There’s an oddity called the ECB, or English Cricket Board, and Wales is part of it. Yes, and like the letter P in Philosophy, Wales is the silent partner. And we’ve had the P taken out of us ever since. Take Glamorgan Cricket. Wish somebody would. Who on occasions calls themselves, “The Dragons”, and say they are producing Welsh Cricketers of the future, but are hostile to Wales having their own national side? Strange, as bastions of Cricket Scotland & Ireland have sides?. They, Glamorgan,… Read more »

What you say about Glamorgan CC is quite interesting. I’ve given up searching for current info but until at least 2019, the treasurer seems to have been someone whose comments here are frequently deleted. Of course, it may not be his real name…

I totally agree with you, these Welsh cricket players are playing for England. It is high time Wales had its own cricket team 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Actually Wales used to play International Cricket before WW2.Noteable results were a 10 run loss to South Africa,a draw against New Zealand and a win against The West Indies.Unfortunatly back in the day the elitists who ran cricket in Wales decided that joining the County Championship as Glamorgan would serve the interests of Welsh cricket allot better.
