Penny Mordaunt launches Christmas-themed attacks on Welsh and Scottish Governments

Penny Mordaunt has launched a Christmas-themed attack on the governments of  Wales and Scotland.

She claimed it was “a good job the nativity didn’t take place in Labour-run Wales”, joking that Mary and Joseph would have been “clobbered for an overnight stay” because of the Welsh Government’s proposed tourist tax.

The House of Commons Leader also criticised Holyrood’s SNP-run administration in a mock version of The Twelve Days Of Christmas, featuring references to key party figures being questioned by police, and Scottish health secretary Michael Matheson running up £11,000 in roaming charges on an iPad issued by the Scottish Parliament.

Tribute

Shadow Commons leader Lucy Powell had earlier paid tribute to Mark Drakeford, the Labour First Minister of Wales who announced on Wednesday that he is standing down.

Ms Mordaunt replied: “I would put on my record my thanks to Mark Drakeford for his service, but I would remind people of Labour’s record in Wales.”

She added: “It’s a good job the nativity didn’t take place in Labour-run Wales.

“Mary and Joseph would have been clobbered for an overnight stay levy, she’d have had poor maternity services, the shepherds would not have been able to take the time off to bear witness due to cuts in the rural affairs budget, and the three wise men would have arrived post-Epiphany due to the blanket 20-mile-an-hour speed limit and the poor condition of the road network.

“Don’t fall for what Labour say – look at what they do when they are in power.

“Not all men who wear red and promise free gifts are to be trusted.”

Morality

SNP Commons leader Deidre Brock claimed Ms Mordaunt had given her “a lecture on morality” at the previous week’s Business questions as she queried the UK Government’s own morality, adding: “Could it be the morality of near-Victorian levels of destitution across the UK?”

Ms Mordaunt responded: “If she wants to go and find Victorian levels of rats and rickets, she should go to SNP-run local authorities.

“But I think we should have a festive round-up on SNP morality: 12 hours of police questioning, 11 grand roaming charges, 10 years without school inspections, nine sham embassies, eight years of poor child mental health, seven years without ferries, six years shirking welfare powers.”

To the tune of “five gold rings”, she added: “£500 million over-spent on Edinburgh’s tram.

“£4 million to install a heat pump, three high-profile arrests, two overseas jollies, and a dodgy Jaguar EV.”

Addressing Ms Brock, the Commons Leader added: “I thank her. I have succeeded in bringing a smile to her face and I must thank her for being the gift that keeps on giving at Business questions. I hope that in 2024 better things are destined for the Scottish people.”

Class act. Sword bearer only knows how to fight, fight fight fight and fight then fight again. With some fighting left over for after (see conference speech if you wonder why fight fight)
Mary and Joseph would not be allowed intro to the UK by her government or deported to Rwanda. And the three wise men, no chance, they would all be deported to Rwanda where the leader makes his opposition vanish.

What a great point that exposes her stupid analogy. If Mary and Joseph tried to come here now, Jesus would likely have been born in Rwanda.

Most of Maudent’s criticism come from policies that have been forced on Scotland and Wales through Tory austerity. As for the others, e.g. £500m over spend on trams, not as if England hasn’t gone over budget on HS2, or Crossrail, or wasted billions on corrupt covid contracts including £50bn on a completely feckless test and trace – administered by a Tory crony. Or, do you want to mention the Conservative Brexit ferry route contract that was given to a company with no ferries. Interestingly the tune of “five gold rings” is copywrigted and its use requires payment to the owner… Read more »

Yes indeed. Their new desperate strategy is to drown us in a tsunami of hypocrisy just to stop us voting.

Typical response this “blame someone else” no one is talking about the record in England or Scotland , we are talking about WALES and the failure of a Labour Welsh Government who has been in power 20 years . I find it’s now the norm that all Labour supporters won’t ever admit failures or mistakes when they are clearly seen, but hail comments about some one else. If you want to criticise England and the conservatives then go to England

I think that a lot of English might think this is good humour though. I wouldn’t mind being roasted if it was finely crafted comedy but she’s just not funny. She’s got to be one of those people whose whole social scene is people polite laughing around her. You know? Where the mouths are smiling but the eyes are searching for an exit? I really think that a lot of English people truly find that stuff thigh-slapping, rib-cracking, tears streaming down their cheeks hilarious though. It just goes to show the fundamental difference in cultures. We should probably go our… Read more »

She can talk – at least Joseph and Mary would be in the country. If she and her party had their way, as immigrants, Joseph and Mary wouldn’t be allowed to set one foot on British soil in the first place.

My message to Penny:
If you have such a distaste of Wales and Scotland, why don’t you and your party just remove us from your beloved union and give us our freedom as an independent countries?
Then you, in England and Westminster will not have to worry about what our countries are doing.

Of course, they won’t because if we were independent, they could not take our resources as their own as they have done in the past and are still doing.

This woman needs to launch her attacks nearer to home where her government is falling to pieces in front of her nose. I suggests she keeps her beak out of other people’s affairs and conentrate on her own failings.

The cheesy Westminster quips. I thought they couldn’t get anymore cringey but now they’re holiday themed.About as smart and funny as something you’d pull out of a Christmas cracker. Stop trying to be funny Westminster just run your country. It’s so cringe. What a loser way to try and insult someone. PS. Why are you trying to insult them weirdo. It’s just urgh. I’m embarrassed for her. It was so bad the insult didn’t even land. It just flopped to the floor in front of me in a sad heap. Something about wise men and Wales sucks. Ok. Good one… Read more »

She needs to keep her selective bible to herself. If he existed, Jesus was a Liberal leftie. Now if he existed God was a right wing tory clearly, hate you until you die, then you are OK. Her government makes lives much worse. Backs poverty and arrogantly blames all for her lack of humanity and so christmas spirit.

Poor little petulant Tory child who just cannot stand the set in stone forever fact that Wales and Scotland will never majority elect her Empire colony demolition squad. If anything makes sense of her bizarre and embarrassing speech, which nobody grasped the substance of, it’s when Welsh and Scottish voters go to the polls to let her dismal mob know that we are going to ‘STAND UP AND FIGHT’.

Is this unsmiling Mordant launching her bid for the Tory Leadership – if there’s anything Tory left to lead after the next U.K. General Election? The woman who never smiles seems intent, nonetheless, to play the role of the Xmas clown with aplomb. Oh Penny, you’re on the Front Bench but, like the rest of your colleagues, in a few months time you will be no more than a ‘Has been’ wondering where it all went wrong! Sent into the wilderness with only the park bench to rest your head upon and pondering why your star led you astray.
