Membership of the Welsh independence campaign group YesCymru has doubled in less than two months to 5,000.

The cross-party campaign which fights for Welsh independence had around 2,500 members at the beginning of May.

Over 9,500 have also signed a declaration calling for Welsh independence.

The membership has risen even though YesCymru postponed marches in Wrexham on 18 April, Tredegar on 6 June and Swansea on 5 September due to the coronavirus pandemic.

‘Long way’

“A big thank you to everyone who has joined YesCymru since our launch in 2016,” YesCymru said. “We have just passed 5,000 current members.

“Our membership has doubled since the start of May! But there’s plenty of room for more!”

Morgan Rhys Powell tweeted: “That’s great news! I’m proud of having been one of the first thousand.”

John McAllister tweeted his 528th membership and said: “Can’t believe we’re at 5000 members! We’ve come a long way since I joined! It’s happening.”

Dafydd Roberts said: “It was a pleasure joining as member 4496. The hard work starts now!”
