Today is our chance in Wales to beat Brexit
Liz Saville-Roberts, Plaid Cymru Westminster leader
They said these EU elections wouldn’t happen. They told us we would be out of the EU on March 29th. By now we were all meant to be basking in the red, white and blue bliss of our divine right to British sovereignty.
Three years of negotiations, a new Prime Minister and a General Election later, we couldn’t be further from that Brexit Never Never Land.
It turns out that delivering any form of Brexit, after triggering Article 50 without the semblance of a plan and balancing the whims of a precariously hung parliament, is rather difficult. Who’d have thought it?
While this parliamentary morass has spawned the Brexit party led by an inflated Farage, it has also given hope to the 16 million people in Wales who voted to Remain.
Never has the prospect of our European future been so alive. And never has it been so clear that the best way of securing a European future is by voting for Plaid Cymru in Wales.
On Monday, the Wales Barometer Poll placed Plaid Cymru in second place, behind the Brexit Party. Not only is this the first time that Plaid Cymru has been projected to finish ahead of Labour in a national election, it also confirms that the Liberal Democrats and Greens are far from winning a seat in Wales in today’s election.
Our appeal to the supporters of other Remain-supporting parties has never been so pertinent: today is our chance to win for Remain. If Lib Dems and Greens, and disillusioned Labour voters, lend Plaid Cymru their votes, we can win a majority for Remain. Together, we can win for Wales.
The only way to beat Brexit is to vote for Plaid Cymru. Voting for any party other than Plaid Cymru risks handing success to the Brexit party on a plate. Be in no doubt, the siren voices of the right are poised and ready to interpret any other result as a de facto second referendum and a victory for no deal.
Across Wales, people under the Remain banner are coming to the conclusion that Plaid Cymru is the party for them. A longstanding Labour member, European advisor to successive Welsh governments, and founder of the Erasmus programme Hywel Ceri Jones defected from Labour to Plaid Cymru, because of Labour’s lack of coherent Brexit policy.
So my message ahead of this election is this: vote to reclaim our European future today. And here in Wales, the best way to achieve that is by voting Plaid Cymru.
It is easy to get lost in the deep, dark disorder of Brexit. But together, we have the power to swing the end result. Today is our opportunity to bin Brexit once and for all. Let us fight for what we truly believe in because it is within our grasp if we reach hard enough – I’m sure of it.
