Watch: The incredible anthem as Gareth Bale earned his 100th cap and Wales won 5-1

13 Nov 2021 2 minute read

This is the incredible anthem that belted out as Gareth Bale won his 100th cap and Wales beat Belarus 5-1 at the Cardiff City Stadium tonight.

Having become Wales’ youngest ever player in May 2006 when making his debut against Trinidad & Tobago aged 16 years and 315 days, Bale reached the 100 cap milestone against Belarus in a World Cup qualifier.

15 years after that first match Bale started the game, becoming only the second Welshman after Chris Gunter to reach 100 caps. He is also Wales’ record goalscorer with 36 goals to his name.

The Real Madrid forward had to fight back from a hamstring tear in order to lead his side in a successful comeback.

“It has been an incredible journey and one that started very young,” said Bale before the match.

“To get 100 caps will personally be an incredible achievement and one you never think about when you start out.

“We have been through the lows when I first joined to grow Welsh football, to try to put it on the right path and inspire the generations coming through.

“I think even now the youngsters have watched us come from a lower-ranked team to a higher-ranked team. It has given them a drive to push to get better as we have been that inspiration through the years.

“We have all bought into it – the fans, the team, the staff – and every manager has bought into the same philosophy that we want to push Welsh football as far as we can. We have done a great job and hopefully there is more to come.”

The rugby crowd sing it better?? You obviously were not at the game last night. I assume you were also not at the Wales v South Africa game last Saturday. The WRU had the anthem (sung by a choir) piped over the loudspeaker system in an attempt create an atmosphere. When did you last hear Calon Lan and Yma O Hyd spontaneously sung by a Welsh rugby crowd? Both sung at last night’s Wales v Belarus game. If you’re going to make comments about Welsh sports fans actually go to the games. I agree the person who created the video… Read more »

It’s noticeable that in recent years the singing at Welsh football matches has been very impressive. What is interesting is the custom in recent years for the crowd halfway thru a game to suddenly start singing Hen Wlad Fy’n Nhadau. Also, I’m sure I heard at one stage last night the chorus of Max’s Hymns and Arias!

How many know the words of the anthem etc at a football match in Cardiff or even speak Welsh for that matter?
