When Wrexham fan Michael Archer posted a message on Twitter copying in Rob McElhenney, he possibly didn’t anticipate a reply from the star actor.

However, the co-owner of the club responded with a touching message for the Wrexham fan whose dad died on the day of the club’s first home game of the season.

Michael poured his heart out in the post detailing how he and his father had purchased season tickets together after years meaning to do so, but how his dad sadly passed away on the day of the home National League game against Notts County.

Michael had copied in Wrexham AFC and co-owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds to ask permission if he could put a sticker of his dad on his seat, “so he can still watch the season with us.”

The Always Sunny In Philadelphia and Mythic Quest star replied with a heartfelt response that was widely praised by hundreds of fans of the club.

He wrote: “I’m so sorry to hear that Michael. If I’ve learned anything about the Wrexham AFC community it’s that you hold each other up. I’m sure he was proud of being a part of that tradition. And I’m sure he was proud of you. I hope we can honor his memory by continuing that legacy.”

Now, the Wrexham fan has revealed how the club has been in touch with him and how he has been overwhelmed with the reaction to his Twitter post.

“I asked the club could I put a sticker on his seat, and the response has been mind blowing to say the least,” said Michael.

“There are some wonderful people on this planet, I’ve had messages from some amazing people within the club. All I can say is, I’m genuinely humbled that they took the time to personally message me, and arrange for the club to help me.

“I am crying lots, but this is the only thing that I’ve seen make my mum smile since it happened.

“Sport is wonderful sometimes, and means so much.”

Brighter days

The takeover of Wrexham by Hollywood stars McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds has attracted worldwide attention since news of their interest in the club was first revealed in September 2020.

A decade ago, the club was taken over by Wrexham Supporters’ Trust, after years of financial difficulty in which it racked up huge debts and faced the very real possibility of going to the wall.

The new owners have given Wrexham fans the hope that brighter days lie ahead.
