The Cardiff locations that could offer the perfect view of next week’s solar eclipse

On Tuesday, August 12, up to 90% of the Sun is expected to be covered by the Moon during a rare partial solar eclipse, creating a dramatic sight as the celestial bodies align and the Sun begins to set in the west.

The unusual timing of the event means viewers across south Wales could have the chance to see the eclipse unfold against the backdrop of the evening sky, with the setting Sun adding to the spectacle. Weather permitting, it promises to be one of the most impressive astronomical events visible from the UK in recent years.

With many people expected to head outdoors to catch a glimpse of the phenomenon, Cardiff digital magazine ItsOnCardiff has rounded up some of the best places in and around the capital to watch the eclipse. From hilltop viewpoints and country parks to beaches and waterfront bars, there are plenty of scenic locations to take in the spectacle.

Bay Barrage

If you’re looking for an uninterrupted view of the western horizon, the Bay Barrage is hard to beat. Stretching between Cardiff Bay and Penarth, the barrage offers expansive views across the water, making it one of the city’s most popular spots for sunsets. Whether you’re stopping by for a meal or simply enjoying a drink on the terrace, you’ll have front-row seats as the Moon gradually passes across the face of the Sun.

Barry Island Beach

Barry Island Beach is one of south Wales’ most iconic coastal destinations, and its wide sandy shoreline makes it an ideal place to experience the eclipse. With uninterrupted views stretching across the Bristol Channel, visitors will have plenty of opportunities to watch the Sun descend while the Moon covers much of its surface.
