A still from the trailer for Welcome to Wrexham

A trailer for the Welcome To Wrexham docuseries has been unveiled – and it’s as hilarious as you would imagine.

Released overnight in America the trailer for the show that will follow the fortunes of Wrexham Football Club after being bought by superstar owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, also shows what happened when a Danny DeVito lookalike turned up at the Turf pub in the town.

The trailer filmed when Rob and Ryan visited the club for the first time in October, shows a spoof It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia cast sat in the hostelry situated next to Wrexham’s Racecourse ground, being watched by the actual cast of Rob McElhenny’s hit comedy at their pub in Philadelphia.

Changing the name of the comedy from It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia to It’s Never Sunny In Wrexham, the trailer also features Rob and Ryan putting in a trademark comedic turn.

The trailer comes after Rob and Ryan’s visit to Wrexham and a video emerged on Twitter of what on first appearance looked like actual Hollywood royalty Danny DeVito walking into The Turf pub.

It wasn’t so unbelievable as it may have sounded, given the diminutive star appears in It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia alongside Wrexham co-owner McElhenney.

Social media certainly thought so as the story quickly went viral, with Twitter and Facebook inundated with people claiming that it was indeed the legendary Hollywood actor walking into the famed Wrexham boozer.

However, not everybody was so convinced.

Those doubts were proved correct when it was confirmed by the actor’s agent that Mr DeVito was actually filming for the forthcoming Disney Haunted Mansion movie in Atlanta, just a tad more than 4,000 miles away from The Turf pub.

Much of the belief that it was indeed the 75-year-old star of Taxi, Twins and Batman Returns, followed a video showing Ryan Reynolds fuelling speculation by replying ‘I hope so, he flew up here’ in answer to a question from a fan asking if DeVito was in The Turf.

In fact, the Canadian star with the wicked sense of humour wasn’t exactly lying. The person in the pub was a Danny DeVito impersonator, who had made the trip to the north of Wales to appear in scenes to promote the Welcome To Wrexham fly-on-the-wall docuseries to be screened on Disney+ in the UK.

In a message to Nation.Cymru, pub landlord Wayne Jones, who stars in the new trailer, later reinforced what most of us already knew. “I can confirm it was a double and not the real Danny,” he told us.
