£1.4m traffic-free walking and cycling route completed

A £1.4m traffic-free route connecting two communities has been completed, providing a new link for walkers and cyclists.
The 1.25km shared-use path on Ynys Môn links The Cob at Malltraeth with the edge of Newborough, providing a dedicated route between the two villages.
Funded through the Welsh Government’s Active Travel Fund, the scheme also includes traffic-calming measures and a raised table in Newborough, along with four build-outs on The Cob
The route is intended to improve access to Newborough village centre, Ysgol Santes Dwynwen and Newborough National Nature Reserve and Forest.
It forms part of Anglesey Council’s plans to enhance the Lôn Las Cefni route and support the wider Glasffordd Môn project, which aims to create a green corridor across the island.
The council said delivering the scheme had presented challenges because it passes through environmentally sensitive areas, including Special Areas of Conservation and Sites of Special Scientific Interest.
Work included habitat restoration at Pwll Traeth Bach and ecological measures intended to protect wildlife during construction.
Cllr Ieuan Williams, the council’s portfolio holder for Highways, Waste and Climate Change, said: “We are delighted to see this important active travel link now completed. It is an excellent example of delivering active travel infrastructure in a rural area.
“This scheme has overcome significant challenges, particularly given its location within environmentally sensitive areas, and demonstrates the value of strong partnership working with Natural Resources Wales and others.
“It provides a safer, more accessible connection between Malltraeth and Newborough, while supporting our wider ambitions around wellbeing, sustainability and improving everyday travel choices.”
Molly Lovatt, Natural Resources Wales’ Senior Access, Recreation and Partnerships Officer, said: “Extending the Lôn Las Cefni route improves connectivity to key services and destinations, while also delivering health and wellbeing benefits for residents and visitors.
“This scheme shows how infrastructure can support both people and nature, enhancing access while improving biodiversity and long-term resilience.”
