Andrew RT Davies has criticised Mark Drakeford for attending an event alongside individuals who have been expelled from the Labour Party.

The Welsh Conservative Senedd leader expressed “shock” at the news that the First Minister will headline alongside former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and film director Ken Loach.

Drakeford will be speaking at The World Transformed event in Brighton, which is at the same time as the UK Labour Party conference.

Jeremy Corbyn was suspended from the party last October after suggesting that antisemitism in the party was “dramatically overstated for political reasons by our opponents inside and outside the party, as well as by much of the media”.

Other speakers at The World Transformed event on 29 September include director Ken Loach who was expelled from the Labour Party earlier this month.

He had previously claimed there was a “witch-hunt” after four campaign groups were expelled from Labour following criticism of the way Keir Starmer was tackling antisemitism.

In response to the line-up for the event, The Wales Against Antisemitism group said: “Why does Mark Drakeford, as First Minister of Wales, think it appropriate to speak at this event, given antisemitism controversies involving many of his fellow speakers?”

‘Lack of judgement’

Welsh Conservative leader Andrew RT Davies MS said: “This demonstrates a huge lack of judgment and sensitivity on the First Minister’s part.

“Drakeford’s actions begs the question of why he thinks it is appropriate to make friends with those Sir Keir Starmer has said has no place in the Party.

“Is there trouble in paradise between the UK and Welsh leaders given the event is for those who feel ‘increasingly alienated’ by Starmer’s leadership?”

The World Transformed is marketed as a “welcoming space for a new generation of young activists who supported Corbyn’s leadership” but feel “increasingly alienated” by Sir Keir Starmer’s Labour.

Welsh Labour have been approached for a response.

The kind of political opportunism Davies excels at. Anyone watching the UK Labour Party currently can see that it is being ripped apart from within by bad faith actors. Ken Loach, Jeremy Corbyn and numerous others are not deserving of their current fate. Trying to smear Mark Drakeford on a no platform basis is more of the same.

I would have thought that engaging in debates with people who have a different or even an opposing point of view makes sense. If your beliefs and arguments are credible then your opponent might change his/her mind. If you surround yourself with like-minded people all the time you’ll quickly become boring and unimaginative.

SJW-policed echo chambers are the height of fashion. Rational discussion of opposing views is no longer acceptable.

It’s not a BNP meeting, Andrew! And beware of confusing anti-zionism with antisemitism.

So why wasn’t RT asked why he supports a woman who was herself banned from standing for Young Labour after saying she found Eichmann attractive?

Mark Drakeford is speaking at a meeting on Universal Basic Income with a Welsh MP and a Professor. Great to see him promoting Wales and promoting a progressive agenda. This meeting is part of a massive event with many speakers on many subjects that I am sure Andrew RT Davies would find completely objectionable. I find it objectionable that Mr Davies is prepared to share a platform/photograph/Party with MPs who vote to reduce Universal Credit by a weekly sum which is less than their daily lunch bill in the HoC. He shares a party mired in corruption who show no… Read more »

ARTD shocked ? He looks like a robust sort of man who can take that sort of news without getting into a fit of hysteria. Obviously appearances are deceptive.

Serious investigation of offshore banking is more the kind of thing he’d be shocked at.

I truly believe this man would disagree with just about anything useful. Aside from that he has the cold eyes of a dead fish. , indicates an unpleasant character to me.
