Conservative MP launches campaign to put a portrait of the Queen in every British home
A Conservative MP has launched a campaign to put a portrait of the Queen in every home in Britain.
Joyce Morrissey, MP for Beaconsfield, took to Twitter to announce the initiative with the British Monarchists Society, of which she is the patron.
An image posted on the social media site shows the MP holding a picture of The Queen, and a poster that reads: “I am proud to be launching a national campaign with the British Monarchists Society to put a picture of Her Majesty in every home, company and institution that would like one.
“It is time to rediscover our pride in being British!”
Morrissey posted: “I think this is a wonderful, patriotic and unifying campaign for our country. I will be writing to the Prime Minister to ask him to give it careful consideration and looking for opportunities to discuss further in Parliament.”
Earlier this month the MP took aim at students at Oxford University who voted to remove the Queen’s portrait from a common room after they deemed it to “represent recent colonial history”.
Members of Magdalen College Middle Common Room (MCR) voted to take down the portrait at a committee meeting in a bid to make the room more welcoming..
In reaction to the move the MP tweeted to say she had ordered another portrait of the Queen to hang in her office, adding: “Probably send one to Oxford’s Magdalen College as well since they seemed to have misplaced a copy…hope it really brightens up their common room. #GodSaveTheQueen.”
Patriotic material
She also called for a similar scheme to the Australian Constituents’ Request Programme to be launched in the UK, where all Australian citizens are eligible for selected patriotic material, including flags, recordings of the national anthem, and a portrait of The Queen.
The MP’s Queen’s portrait campaign comes as the UK government is encouraging schools across the UK to take part in a ‘One Britain One Nation’ day on June 25th, which includes singing the song “We are Britain and we have one dream to unite all people in one Great Team”.
The lyrics include: “Our nation survived through many storms and many wars, We’ve opened our doors, and widened our island’s shores, We celebrate our differences with love in our hearts, United forever, never apart.”
It ends with the repeating lines “Strong Britain, Great Nation”.

Even more relics from a bygone age, still used in some homes and on some public trains, usually first class mind you. This government loves going back in time, maybe we should bring back the “bloody tower” as a reminder to them how things in royal circles did not always go so smoothly to plan and how insecure their selfless undying love for monarchy and the elite oligarchy really are!
I remember a time before the great plague when people were allowed to fly in aeroplanes, the chairs in those flying machines had antimacassars and you could sit next to your wife (or servant) too.
I knew what antimacassars are but have no idea what macassar is or why chairs need antimacassars.
I think It was a hair product like an old fashioned version of gel. So antimacassars were to protect the chair fabric from the oily/greasy product.
Macassar Oil, usually coconut or palm oil nominally from the port of Makassar, Indonesia. Think silent films and greased down hair, twirled moustachios and “Mwaaaahahaha”.
It was a grease that gentlemen used to put on their hair to save washing it, and deter head lice I suppose. Many young people these days use something called hair gel I’m told, whenever I see it think of head lice.
An oil used on the hair ( by men ) as a styling aid later overtaken by Brylcreem ( or a bit of lard if you were poor !
I long for the day oil of macassar becomes fashionable again, as I long for the day to have hair to put it on.

She was in the Land Army ww2, while my father was in Royal Welch Fusiliers then transferred to Recconnaisance, where survival rate was very low. I think this is a brilliant idea, with the following provisos;
1) The portrait can be of ‘a’ queen (such as drag) rather than ‘the’ queen.
2) portraits by artists under the age of 4 are preferred
or
3) portraits in the Russian Constuctivist or the Minmalist style of Kasimir Malevich are also preferred
4) as artists, we get to draw our own – we can’t put up with other people’s images in our houses.

I’ve been trying to find my cd of Geraint Lovgreen singing Entrepeneur. It contains the wonderful line ‘medrwn agor Swyddfa Bost leol yn Ffos-y-ffin, ond faswn i ddim eisio treulio ‘nyddiau’n llyfu pen ol y queen’. (I had relatives there and as most people have never heard of it, hearing Ffos-y-ffin immortalised in such a way was a bit special)

I think Elisabeth II has done a horrible job decently throughout her life and I thank her for it.
However, the Monarchy is nothing but a slightly ridiculous, but acceptable, alternative to the horror of an elected and potentially politicized head of state.
