Monmouth MS Nick Ramsay has not been selected as the Conservative candidate for the constituency for the forthcoming Senedd election after opting not to put himself forward.

The Welsh Conservatives confirmed that Peter Fox, Leader of Monmouthshire County Council, has been selected in the safe seat and will likely be the next Senedd Member.

Nick Ramsay has been a member for Monmouth since 2007, but he pulled out of a selection meeting before it was due to take place on Friday night.

In November of last year Nick Ramsay had taken the Monmouth Conservative Association to court in an effort to stop them going ahead with a meeting to discuss a petition calling for him to be deselected.

He withdrew his application for an injunction at the last minute and the judge ordered him to pay the association’s legal costs.

He was deselected by the association in December, meaning that the party could choose another candidate.

Peter Fox grew up in Carmarthenshire after his family moved there in the 1970s. He was educated at Ystrad Tywi Secondary School in Carmarthen and then on to Carmarthen Agricultural and Technical College.

In 1990 Peter and his wife Joanne moved to Monmouth to open their own dairy farm. He has been leader of Monmouthshire County Council for over a decade.
