Lettuce banner proclaiming ‘I crashed the economy’ halts Liz Truss event
A banner proclaiming “I crashed the economy” featuring a picture of a lettuce forced Liz Truss from the stage at an event in Suffolk on Tuesday night.
Speaking at a theatre in Beccles, the former prime minister was discussing her support for Donald Trump when the banner unfurled behind her.
Once Ms Truss noticed the sign, which political campaign group Led By Donkeys took credit for, she said “that’s not funny” before picking up her papers and leaving the stage to a smattering of applause.
Pro-Trump
A post from Led By Donkeys sharing the video of the incident read: “We just dropped in on Liz Truss’s pro-Trump speaking tour with a remote-controlled lettuce banner. She didn’t find it funny”.
Ben Stewart, co-founder of Led By Donkeys, who attended the event on Tuesday, told the PA news agency: “This is all about Liz Truss aligning herself with Trump and the far right in America.”
He said: “She’s avidly supporting Trump, and actually she’s lending the weight of the office of British Prime Minister which she held, albeit for a short period of time, to the pro-Trump campaign.
“We thought, she’s aligning herself with the far right in America, and sometimes, not always, but sometimes, one of the best approaches to the far right is to laugh at them.
“And so we decided to install this strategically positioned remote control lettuce banner and press the button towards the end of last night’s event.”
Ms Truss was in the middle of discussing American politics, saying “I support Trump and I want him to win” before the banner unfurled.
As it descended she said: “It’s what I was saying a bit about incumbents, the average American is not doing well, and people do vote on… I think it was Bill Clinton’s adviser who said ‘it’s the economy, stupid.’ So I think that he will probably win.”
Live stream
Ms Truss only lasted 44 days as leader of the country – she famously was outlasted by a lettuce that was recorded on a live stream, created by the Daily Star, which asked: “Which wet lettuce will last longer?” referring to the Prime Minister and an actual lettuce.
Once she had been alerted to the sign behind her, the former prime minister was clearly unhappy and left the stage.
Mr Stewart said she did not return.
“We just wanted to remind people, do not take this person seriously,” he said.
Ms Truss’s office declined to comment.

This was sweet.
I thought Johnson was bad, she exceeded that in short order but not really a surprise given her track record (it was dire). To think the Tory party put her in charge with access to the big red button, also backed by Wales own ARTD. What did he say “clear mandate to deliver her ambition for the country”. The IEA yanked her strings and tanked the nation.
Speaking of tanking the UK via the IEA. Where is Kwarteng now?
Liz the Lettuce sidekick Kamikwasi Kwarteng lived up to his name and decided to crash his political career before the electorate could publicly kick him out.
Considering he ridiculed one of our politicians for his accent, he’d now ironically find it much easier being a Jones or an Evans as he tries to delete his embarrassing political past.
That was impressive. Any more shots to put her firmly back in her box ?
Only one .50 bmg
“I crashed the economy
and the electorate won ”
Thick skin or skull?
Talk about psychic self-defence…
A stroke of genius from Led by donkeys causing a former so called Prime Minister to throw out her toys, leave the stage and prove she was unfit to lead. Are the audience getting a refund? Trump is racism, bigotry, xenophobia, Islamophobia, transphobia, misogyny, alternative truth/reality, disinformation, hatred and division. She set up an event to endorse all of this. Thankfully, it was cut short by her own self doubt and inability to cope. She needs to have a very good look at herself in a mirror.
“She needs to have a very good look at herself in a mirror.” Should have a devastating effect on any mirror she uses.
It is funny to ridicule someone in denial about their life long extreme stupidity.
It is not funny to crash the economy and cause misery to millions.
And even wearing a green dress for the occasion.
This isn’t accurate reporting she was not forced from the stage. There was no reason she couldn’t have continued her speech despite the lettuce it was just her throwing her toys out of the pram and storming off.
This was hysterical lol. She even wore a green dress too. Revenge is best served tossed with garlic dressing. 🥗😋
The sad thing is people still pay her to do these talks! And some people still pay to hear those talks! I wonder sometimes what planet some people are from….
If you read the comments section of The South Wales Argus there’s one contributor who always refers to her as Thicko Truss.
I prefer Thick Lizzy.
It was, in fact, funny.
What wasn’t funny was crashing the economy to the tune of billions and blaming everyone else and taking no responsibility. That, like her, is just pathetic.
These people are like spoilt children: Truss left office almost two years ago and is no longer an MP. She should have a a right to live her life untroubled by champaign socialist thickies who think it’s OK to harass women in their daily lives.
Can anyone explain to me WHY anyone would support/vote for this lady who is obviously totally deluded and incompetent? I just do not get it!
