Man jailed after police officer struck by high-powered electric bike

A man has been jailed after an on-duty police officer was struck by a high-powered electric bike during a plain-clothes operation.
Jake Fernandes, 25, from Caerau, Cardiff, was sentenced to 21 months in prison at Cardiff Crown Court on Friday, September 11.
Police were called to Amroth Road shortly after 8.30pm on Tuesday, August 11, following a collision involving a pedestrian and a Sur-Ron electric off-road bike.
The pedestrian was a police officer who had been carrying out patrols as part of an operation prompted by community concerns over the illegal and anti-social use of high-powered electric bikes.
Fernandes was charged with dangerous driving, driving without insurance or a licence, possession of cannabis with intent to supply and cultivating cannabis.
He pleaded guilty to the offences and was also banned from driving for 21 months.
South Wales Police said regular operations are continuing in response to concerns about the illegal and anti-social use of e-bikes and e-scooters in Cardiff.
More than 800 illegal mechanically propelled vehicles have been seized since August 2025 through joint work between the force and Cardiff Council.
