MPs and peers call for Trump to be blocked from addressing Parliament

A number of MPs and peers have called for Donald Trump to be blocked from addressing Parliament when he visits the UK.

The US president has suggested Buckingham Palace is ‘setting a date for September’ for him to stay in Britain.

But some parliamentarians have voiced concerns that it would be ‘inappropriate’ for him to speak in the Palace of Westminster as his predecessors Barack Obama, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton did.

‘Anti-democratic’

First reported in The Times newspaper, a message sent to Lord McFall of Alcluith, the Lord Speaker, said: “If it is suggested that he be invited to address both Houses of Parliament, I hope that you and Lindsay will suggest that would be inappropriate on this occasion because of his attitude towards and comments about the UK, parliamentary democracy, the Nato alliance and Ukraine.”

Efforts to prevent Mr Trump addressing parliamentarians are being co-ordinated by Lord Foulkes, a minister in Sir Tony Blair’s former government.

Lord Foulkes said: “While the Government is obliged to deal with governments of all kinds, Parliament should not welcome a leader who is anti-democratic and flouts the courts and the rule of law.

“He also fails to condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which all parties in the UK Parliament have done.”

Meanwhile, Labour MP Kate Osborne is said to have asked Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle to follow his predecessor John Bercow in opposing an address from the president.

In a letter to Sir Lindsay she reportedly said: “I am asking you as the Speaker to agree it would be inappropriate and mirror the previous Speaker’s recommendation.”

Ms Osborne has been contacted for comment.

Invitation

Precedent for second-term US presidents who have already made a state visit is usually tea or lunch with the monarch at Windsor Castle, as was the case for George W Bush and Mr Obama.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer handed Mr Trump what he described at the time as a ‘truly historic’ personal invitation from the King for a second state visit when they met at the White House in February.

However, reports suggest that the venue for the trip is now expected to be Windsor Castle, rather than Balmoral or Dumfries House, as previously thought.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office last week, Mr Trump said: “They’re going to do a second, as you know, a second fest … that’s what it is: a fest, and it’s beautiful, and it’s the first time it’s ever happened to one person.

“And the reason is we have two separate terms, and it’s an honour … I’m a friend of Charles, I have great respect for King Charles and the family, William, we have really just a great respect for the family.”

Keep him here and sink him into the foundations of HS2 or that new Thames Tunnel.

I completely agree. He should not be allowed in the country – he is a convicted criminal. Fawning over him by allowing him to address Parliament or meet the King is pandering to his monstrous ego.

There are plenty of convicted criminals in both houses of parliament already, so what difference would one more make?

UK welcomes a convicted felon and adjudicated rapist and now aligned with Russia. Not a good look.

Unfortunately there is a diplomatic get out for heads of state. Starmer thought it would get us off the tariff’s. Kemi would have folded to every demand and reform would have been goose steeping to the US demands with glee. Brexit has us at a massive disadvantage.

We had Putin and Xi Jinping as recent (inside 10-15 years or so) as well.

The UK Parliament full of small time cheats and deviants gets a big time cheat and deviant to deliver one of his drunken bar room mumbler impersonations. Might become a regular feature if this one goes well. Will he come to Cardiff as part of a multistop tour

No thanks. We don’t want him in Cardiff but if he did come to the Senedd, he could be told this is where the anti Welsh traitor who asked your buddy Elon to intervene in Welsh politics hangs out.

Doesn’t have to be the Senedd, any down at heel bar room would do. Just the perfect setting for his ramblings.

If a convicted rapist & felon can have the red carpet treatment who next will be welcomed with open cheeks by PM Keir Starmer & King Charles. Andrew Tate perhaps? Wouldn’t surprise me one iota in today’s populist climate if this were the case. The amount sycophants brown-nosing Trump makes my skin crawl. What signal does this send out, besides Britain waving the white flag, to those who now think threats intimidation and bullying will get you results. Sorry state of affairs all-round.

The Palace of Westminster was likely built with the spoils of the opium trade so there’s no moral reason to object.

Maybe it was from the compensation of slave ownership too…

1833 £17 billion handed out at today’s value…

Paid back via Tax which only ended in 2015…!

And 1834 was when the original Palace of Westminster burnt down. Two very big expenses at the same time. Perhaps the private sector made a very generous and timely offer in return for military support to force their products into China.
