Murder investigation launched after man dies following violent disorder

A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a 56-year-old man who was seriously injured during violent disorder involving a group of men.

Anthony “Tony” Jones, from Brecon, was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries following an incident in Pontnewynydd, near Pontypool, on Thursday, August 6.

Gwent Police said Mr Jones has since died and his family are being supported by specialist officers.

Police received a report of violent disorder involving a group of men in Mill Street at around 7.15pm.

Seven men, aged 31, 39, 40, 45, 59, 61 and 73, have been arrested in connection with the disorder and remain in police custody.

Officers are now trying to establish the movements of those involved before and after the incident.

Senior investigating officer Detective Superintendent Laura Bartley said: “We recognise that reports of this nature will cause concern in our community, but we have officers working around the clock conducting enquiries as part of the investigation.

“We’re trying to establish the movements of those involved both before and after the disorder and are asking motorists who were driving along Hospital Road, Mill Road and the surrounding areas between 6pm and 9pm on Thursday to check their dashcam footage.”
