A new walking festival is being launched this autumn to encourage people to explore a recently completed route through one of Wales’ best-known river valleys.
The first Tywi Valley Path Festival of Walks will run in Carmarthenshire from September 16 to October 4, with guided events taking place along the route between Carmarthen and Llandeilo.
The festival follows the official opening of the Tywi Valley Path in May and has been organised by Carmarthenshire County Council’s Tourism Development Team.
Its programme includes wildlife walks, heritage tours, creative workshops and Nordic walking sessions aimed at a range of abilities.
Events begin on September 16 with a West Wales Wild Watch session at Nantgaredig, followed the next day by a Weave and Walk event in Llandeilo.
A Castles and Gardens walk will be held on September 20, with Nordic walking sessions on September 21 and 27.
Other events include A Tale of Two Rivers on September 26, while the festival concludes with a guided walk through Golden Grove parkland on October 4.
The Tywi Valley Path passes through countryside and riverside areas between Carmarthen and Llandeilo, taking in historic sites and wildlife habitats along the way.
The route includes new bridges across the rivers Tywi and Cothi, which were constructed by Walters Group, which is also supporting the festival.
Carmarthenshire County Council said the event is intended to encourage greater use of the path by residents and visitors following its completion earlier this year.
Councillor Hazel Evans, the authority’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said: “The Tywi Valley Path Festival of Walks is a wonderful opportunity to discover one of Carmarthenshire’s most scenic walking routes and the heritage, wildlife and stories that make it so special.
“We’re delighted to offer a varied programme for all abilities and are grateful to Walters Group for supporting the festival and helping improve access along the route through the construction of the landmark bridges.”
Bookings for the guided walks are now open.
