Planners reject changes to major housing development

Nicholas Thomas, Local Democracy Reporter
Council planners have rejected proposed changes to materials being used as part of a major redevelopment of a former university campus.
More than 200 homes are earmarked for the former Caerleon Campus in Newport, which controversially closed in 2016 before most of the site was sold for housing.
Developer Acorn Property Group had sought a minor amendment to an existing planning permission relating to car parks and pedestrian routes within the development.
Planning documents show the company wanted to change the colour of some parking bays to “break up the extent and appearance of the hard surfacing”.
The proposed amendment also sought to “simplify the hard surface material for some of the car parking spaces and pedestrian routes around the site”.
However, Newport City Council planning officers concluded the proposed changes were significant enough to go beyond what could be approved as a non-material amendment.
They therefore refused the application.
