The Prime Minister has confirmed that there will be a “Welsh dimension” to the inquiry into the Covid-19 pandemic, Mark Drakeford has said.

The First Minister has said he pressed Boris Johnson for a “guarantee” that the UK investigation would “properly examine” actions of the Welsh Government.

The Welsh Government has been under pressure to hold a Wales-only inquiry from Plaid Cymru and the Welsh Conservatives.

But so far resisted pressure to do so, arguing a UK-wide investigation into the pandemic is sufficient.

The Welsh Government has previously said it has “requested” that the UK Government make sure that “specific chapters of the inquiry deal exclusively with the lived experiences of those here in Wales”.

But in a letter to Welsh Tory leader Andrew RT Davies, Mark Drakeford said this could be “reconsidered” the “approach” of the UK Government is “found to be inadequate” that could change.

Mark Drakeford said: “Today I pressed the PM for a guarantee the UK covid inquiry would properly examine the actions of @WelshGovernment and experiences of the people of Wales.

“The PM confirmed there will be a proper Welsh dimension to the inquiry and spoke of its importance to the whole of the UK.”

The answer to the questions you pose will emerge, as the First Minister presses forward with this political set-up to ensure he avoids scrutiny, while the people of Wales are left without answers as to why Mr Drakeford took the decisions he did.

C’mon Drakeford, you know Johnson’ s ‘guarantees’ mean f…k all, but in this instance it suits your agenda as your actions will go under the radar of an uk inquiry. Power without responsibility, – that’s ‘Welsh Labour’ for you

Just waiting now for Westminster to fail again. MD can say he tried and Westminster didn’t, and then we can hold our own detailed inquiry.

Why do we have to wait for Westminster to ‘fail’? We need an enquirey in Wales – where we ‘do things differently’. Or are you one of Drakefords political ‘set-up’ supporters?
