Rob McElhenney pays tribute to fans who raised £100,000 to save Wrexham AFC
Rob McElhenney has paid tribute to fans who raised £100,000 to save Wrexham AFC.
The club’s co-owner recognised the sacrifice of supporters, some of whom gave their life savings to make sure the club was allowed to start the new season 10 years ago today.
A decade ago, the club was taken over by Wrexham Supporters’ Trust, after years of financial difficulty in which it racked up huge debts and faced the very real possibility of going to the wall.
On the anniversary McElhenney said: “One of the most important days in the club’s history. We are honored to be a part of its future. Let’s Go.”
Wrexham AFC said: “On this day 10 years ago, on the back of almost a decade of fighting to save our club, fans raised £100,000+ to ensure we could begin the new season.
“Deeds to houses, wedding funds & life savings were thrown in to save us, and now we look forward to brighter days.”
Wrexham fan Natalie Rowley said: “Awful time for the club and heartbreaking as fans to be faced with no club.
“So proud of our fans saving #WxmAFC, it really does still brings tears to my eyes, from kids piggy banks to house deeds!
“We deserve this bit of good fortune after all the crap we’ve endured. Up the town!”
‘Spirit’
Wrexham councillor Marc Jones said: “Fans saved @Wrexham_AFC club. The only constant in any football club. With this spirit, we’ll be here long after the current players, managers and owners have departed.”
Dan Rowe said: “This is why the takeover means so much. For 10+ years it’s all been about survival and finally we can concentrate on progression – I love my football club!!! #WxmAFC”
Tom Williams said: “Quick reminder that it hasn’t always been Hollywood, Documentaries and signing players from higher leagues for money on three year contracts. I think we’ve earned a bit of good fortune.”
