Tesco self-scan checkouts to start speaking Welsh after customers complain
Tesco have said that they will teach their self-scan checkouts to speak Welsh.
Customers had complained that the voice commands on the machines were set to English even when the language option was set to Welsh, even at stores in majority Welsh-speaking areas such as Caernarfon.
Twitter user Ffyncwraig had asked Tesco “why are your self pay tills voice commands in English even when Cymraeg is chosen? Can you amend this so that both text and voice match in chosen language please. Diolch.”
Tesco later replied that their “self-scan checkouts will be updated with the Welsh Language in the appropriate stores in due course”.
They confirmed to Retail Gazette that they were “recording a new Welsh language voice for our self-service tills in all Welsh stores.”
“It is important for us to give our Welsh-speaking customers good service, and we were the first supermarket to introduce a Welsh language option on self-service checkouts,” the spokesperson said.
“We are currently in the process of updating all our self-service checkouts to provide an even better user experience for our Welsh customers.”
