‘Torrential downpours’ weather warning for Wales extended until the end of the day
A yellow weather warning of “torrential downpours” for Wales has been extended until the end of Saturday.
Following rain overnight and during the morning, heavier showers and thunderstorms are likely to break out this afternoon and evening, the Met Office said.
They added that heavy rain, showers and isolated thunderstorms may cause some flooding and transport disruption.
The Met Office warned that:
- There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus
- Delays to train services are possible
- Flooding of a few homes and businesses could occur.
- Some short term loss of power and other services is possible, with possible damage due to lightning strikes, in a few places
“Many parts will miss these, but some torrential downpours are likely in a few places, bringing around 20 mm of rain in less than an hour and 30-40 mm in a couple of hours,” they said. “Lightning and hail may prove additional hazards in some locations.”
The warning was changed to focus on rain rather than thunderstorms as this will be the main hazard, though some thunderstorms are likely. The end time has also been extended until the end of Saturday.
