Transport for Wales has expanded its fibre broadband network to connect two major data centre sites in south Wales.

The ffibr network now provides a direct high-speed connection between Cloud Centres and Vantage Data Centres, allowing businesses to access services including cloud computing and artificial intelligence infrastructure.

The latest expansion follows the launch of ffibr in November 2024. Cloud Centres Networks became its first commercial customer in 2025 through a connection delivered in partnership with Cardiff University.

The network has since been extended further into Cardiff and now connects the Cloud Centres facility directly with Vantage Data Centres.

The fibre infrastructure is being installed alongside the electrification of the Core Valley Lines, using the railway network to extend high-speed digital connections across parts of south Wales, including areas where providing conventional fibre infrastructure can be more difficult.

Commenting on the project, Adam Price MS, Cabinet Minister for Enterprise, Connectivity and Energy at Welsh Government, said:“This is a powerful example of how we can do things differently in Wales – using the assets we already have, to build the infrastructure we need for the future.

“By combining public investment with innovative delivery, TfW ffeibr is extending world class digital connectivity into the Valleys, not just our cities, and creating new opportunities for jobs, enterprise and innovation. Crucially, it’s a model that keeps value within Wales – reinvesting in our communities and helping us build a more resilient, inclusive and self reliant economy.”

Guy Reiffer, Managing Director of ffeibr, said: “For a long time, access to the highest-quality digital infrastructure has been concentrated around major cities. What we’re doing here is fundamentally changing that, putting the Valleys on an equal digital footing and making them a realistic, attractive base for data-driven businesses.

“This isn’t just about connectivity; it’s about confidence. When organisations see that they can access resilient, high-performance networks in places like Church Village, it changes how and where they choose to invest, grow and create jobs. That’s how we begin to unlock sustained economic growth in communities that haven’t always benefited from it in the past.”

Karen Foster, Vice President of Sales for Cloud Centres, said: “We’re delighted to work with ffeibr, a new and innovative connectivity provider across Wales, who bring exciting new opportunities to our customers. Linking together the two leading hosting centres in South Wales adds value to our customers, who often host across both centres for Business Continuity and greater solution agility.”

TfW Fibre Limited is an owned subsidiary business of Transport for Wales Ltd. As a not‑for‑profit company, ffeibr reinvests all commercial returns into the Welsh public sector, ensuring the economic value generated by the network is retained within Wales.
