Major upgrades are planned for Barry Docks train station to prepare for new trains rolled out for the South Wales Metro.

The station will see more frequent trains with more seats from 2023 as part of the metro project.

To accommodate the expected rise of passengers using the station, transport planners are bidding for funding to build space for buses, taxis, and cycle parking by the south entrance.

Vale of Glamorgan council is now consulting the public on the proposed upgrades ahead of the final plans being drawn up.

Councillor Peter King, cabinet member for neighbourhood services and transport, said: “The council is seeking the views of the local community on proposals to improve public transport infrastructure around Barry Docks railway station.

“Not only will the proposed transport interchange enhance station access, but the proposals also include: electric vehicle charging infrastructure; improvements to the existing pedestrian and cycle route to the Station from Dock View Road; additional cycle parking and improvements to signage, the existing subway, lighting and seating around the station.

“Our commitment to reducing carbon emissions in the Vale of Glamorgan can only be realised if we invest in greener transport links, such as these.”

The plans also include building apartments to the northwest of the station, as well as shops and a cafe. The consultation ends on December 7 and can be found on the council’s website. The total works are expected to cost about £7.8 million.
