The owner of a Ferrari that went viral after appearing to have been vandalised in Cardiff has revealed the damage to the luxury car was actually part of a marketing stunt.

Richard Williams, who runs the Moonlight Donkey Instagram account which shares content about cryptocurrency investing, said the apparent damage to the car was staged as a prank.

The confession comes after an image of the Ferrari, which had the words “scammer” and “con artist” spray-painted across the side, began circulating on social media. The vehicle had been parked outside the John Lewis store in the city centre, drawing the attention of passers-by and online users.

Many initially believed the car had been targeted by vandals, with the graffiti suggesting the owner had angered someone.

Some also noticed that the car appeared to be missing one of its front wheels, adding to the unusual scene and prompting further speculation online.

The image quickly attracted a wave of reactions on social media, with users sharing jokes and theories about what might have happened.

One commenter wrote: “At least they matched the spray to the brakes.”

Another added: “I don’t want to jump to conclusions… but I have a feeling they may have scammed someone?”

However, Williams has since confirmed the situation was not genuine vandalism. Instead, he said the damage had been deliberately created as part of a stunt.

Williams later confirmed the stunt in a video shared on his social media page.

The clip shows him using a power washer to remove the graffiti from the Ferrari, with the paint washing away to reveal the car’s original finish underneath.

He posted the video with the caption “April Fools”, confirming the apparent vandalism had been staged as part of a prank.
