Welsh construction firm enters centenary year with £325m order book

A Welsh construction company has entered its 100th year with more than £325m of work either under way or secured.

Denbighshire-based Wynne Construction currently has £228m of projects on site, with another £99m of schemes secured and going through pre-construction.

The projects stretch into 2030 and include developments in education, healthcare, housing, leisure and heritage across Wales and the North West of England.

Among the schemes currently being delivered is a £26m leisure and wellbeing centre in Newport and the £13m Tŷ Haverfordia development in Pembrokeshire, which will provide apartments for people aged over 55.

The family-owned company is also working on the £31m Aethwy Care development on Anglesey, which will include a residential care home and integrated health and social care facilities.

In north-east Wales, it is building an £11m archive centre for Denbighshire and Flintshire councils.

Across the border, its projects include the £4m Maggie’s Centre in Liverpool, providing facilities for people affected by cancer.

the company said having projects secured several years ahead would allow it to plan staffing and investment while providing greater certainty for companies in its supply chain.

‘Proud’

Managing director Chris Wynne said: “We are proud to be delivering such a diverse range of projects in Wales and the North West of England.

“While the individual buildings are very different, they are being designed and built to provide long-term benefits for the people and communities that will use them.

“Many of these schemes are also being delivered in partnership with long-standing clients and supply chain partners. These relationships are extremely important to us and are central to the successful delivery of our work.

“A strong forward order book is important not only in financial terms, but also because it gives confidence to our workforce and supply chain. We are able to plan resources, develop our teams, and invest in skills, training, and employment opportunities.”

The company has also added several projects to its pipeline this year.

They include an affordable housing development in Bodelwyddan, the redevelopment of Ysgol Pendref primary school and Denbigh High School, and the Egni project at Bangor University-led Menai Science Park, or M-SParc, on Anglesey.

Centenary

Wynne Construction was established 100 years ago and remains family owned.

Mr Wynne said its order book was particularly significant given the pressures facing the construction industry.

He said: “The construction industry continues to face challenging market conditions, including cost pressures and wider economic uncertainty, so to enter our 100th year with a strong and diverse order book is particularly positive.
