Wrexham’s new owners warned ‘someone will call you a c**t’

Wrexham AFC’s new owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have received a warning from the club’s executive director – to prepare themselves to be called a c**t.

Humphrey Ker, the English writer and actor on McElhenney’s ‘Mythic Quest’ series was the person tasked with finding a football club for the Hollywood A listers.

In February 2021, Ker was unveiled as executive director at Wrexham AFC following the takeover of the club by McElhenney and Reynolds.

Ker, who used to watch British football games in between breaks filming Mythic Quest in the States, said he is trying to educate his new bosses on some finer points of the game they can expect to encounter.

“One of my main jobs is explaining football culture to Rob and Ryan,” he said, in an interview in Four Four Two magazine. “They are both very astute. But I told them that at some point, you’ll be at an airport or train station and someone will call you a c**t.

“It doesn’t make any difference if you’re a good guy. That’s just football. That’s life.”

‘Up the town!’

The interview in the UK football magazine, part of a larger piece about the struggles Wrexham have faced in the last decade, is another piece of positive publicity for the club, as it begins what is likely to be one of the most eventful seasons in the club’s history.

If the success of the co-owners ongoing, hilarious social media campaign is any measure they’ll be champions of the National League by Christmas.

The latest missive saw Rob McElhenney post a new Tik Tok video in which he encourages his It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia co-stars to cheer on Wrexham ahead of last week’s season opener against Solihull Moors.

In the humorous video released on TikTok – the club’s new sponsors – Danny DeVito is seen asking: “Now you want it? Doing it now? Doing it right now?” before unenthusiastically adding “Go Wrexham.”

Glenn Howerton asks “Why are you making me do this?”, Caitlin Olson makes bird noises, co-star Charlie Day asks “What am I getting paid?” before Rob McElhenney finishes with “Up the town! Go Wrexham!”

The takeover of Wrexham by the acting stars has attracted worldwide attention since news of their interest in the club was first revealed in September 2020.

A decade ago, the club was taken over by Wrexham Supporters’ Trust, after years of financial difficulty in which it racked up huge debts and faced the very real possibility of going to the wall.

Now, the future looks very different indeed.

Why specifically the c word? That’s a weird thing to warn them about.

No you cheeky bast, I go to matches and watch our national team home and away while doing my coaching badges with the FAW and still play it to a decent level.I was asking why the c-word specifically. I’m sorry but you know nothing of language.

It’s because Americans are sensitive to the word

Us Wrexham fans have had decades of the Welsh media bias towards Cardiff, Swansea and Newport. It’s time for our 5 minutes of fame.
