It’s the legendary Wales kit that has become a design classic. Now the much-loved Admiral-style Wales kit is back after being given a modern makeover.

The sportswear company who created the original Wales kit back in the late ’70s have resurrected the iconic design from its vaults and updated it for a new audience.

The Wales ‘Hourglass’ design is available as part of the Admiral Kit Builder, which allows players and supporters to design a kit that represents their team.

And for Wales’ fans unhappy with the national team’s much-maligned new kit, it offers a chance to design an alternative.

Admiral says: “The iconic 1976 Admiral Wales shirt. A design that captured the bold spirit of the ’70s, when every team wanted a kit that stood out from the crowd.

“Now, with the Admiral Kit Builder, your team can bring this classic design back to life in your own colours for next season.

“With our Kit Builder, you can customise every detail. From your team colours and crest to your sponsors and those extra finishing touches.Experiment with different designs, refine the look, and create a unique kit that reflects your club’s identity. Take full control of the design process and produce a kit your players and supporters will be proud to wear.”

In a post on their Instagram account Admiral say they are reintroducing the classic late ’70s Wales design for a new audience.

Using pics of legendary former Wales players and managers, John Toshack and Terry Yorath, Admiral eulogised about the ‘magnificent’ kit, which they reckon is probably Wales’ greatest ever.

“There’s something wonderfully self-assured about the 1976 Admiral shirt: that rich red, the over-sided crest and, most of all, those yellow-and-green tramlines sweeping down either side. It should, by rights, be far too much. Instead, it is magnificent.

“This was the very beginnings of football shirt design. Before the wild thoughts of the Admiral team took hold, everything was minimalist, especially on the international scene. The Admiral shirt simply arrived, looked fantastic and we all become normalised to bold patterns and colours.

“There is a warmth to it now, too. Those tramlines have become inseparable from memories of Welsh football in the 1970s, and from an era when international shirts seemed to carry a little more character. You see one today and it still stops you. Perhaps that is the mark of a great kit: 50 years on, it can still make you stop and think “that’s a bit special”.

Head over to the Admiral Kit Builder and create the kit you’ve always wanted. Choose from 45+ colours and personalise every detail with your own crest, sponsors, names and numbers.
